Fixed star Seginus, Gamma Boötis (γ Boo), is a 3rd magnitude double star on the left shoulder of the Herdsman, constellation Boötes.
      Average Magnitude 3.03 (3.02 to 3.07), spectral type A7 III, color bluish-white.
      γ Boo is a Delta Scuti variable, a type of pulsating variable star; it is a fast spinner with a projected rotational velocity of 140 km/s; and it also has a circumstellar debris disk of orbiting dust, indicating an excess of infrared radiation beyond that emitted by the star. ^[1]

γ Boo is officially named Seginus.
      The formation of this name begins with the Greek constellation name Βοϖτης (Boötes), which was transliterated and then corrupted in the manuscripts of the Arabic Almagest. One of these Arabic corruptions, in turn, was transliterated into Latin theguius, which became further corrupted into cheguius, ceginus, etc. One form, Ceginus, was applied as a star name to γ Boo by late medieval times, and “Seginus” is its recent spelling. ^[2]

Manilius termed it prona Lycaonia, “sloping downwards, or in front of, Lycaon,” referring to the Greater Bear, as the star marks the left shoulder of Boötes near that constellation. ^[3]

Bečvář listed it as Haris, apparently derived from the Arabic name of the constellation of Boötes, Al-Haris Al-Sama meaning “the guard of the north.”
      Al Achsasi al Mouakket listed γ Boo as Menkib al Aoua al Aisr, which was translated into Latin as Humerus Sinister Latratoris, meaning “the left shoulder of barker.” ^[1]

In Chinese astronomy, γ Boo is a single-star asterism named 招搖 Zhāoyáo, “Twinkling Indicator.” It is the 3rd asterism of the 3rd lunar mansion Di (Root). It is also known as 盾 Dùn, “the Shield,” and 矛楯 Máodùn, “Spear and Shield.” ^[4]

Seginus Astrology

The fixed star Seginus is spectral type A7, indicating the planetary nature of Venus.

VENUS:   If rising, good fortune, happiness, gifts, fortunate for love and marriage, gain by legacies and inheritance. If culminating, honor and success, dealings with and help through women, success in occupations of a Venus nature. ^[5]

SPECTRAL CLASS A:   Great honors, artistic appreciation, unexpected gains, good fortune, riches, good judgment, sociableness, creativeness, idealism, and impulsiveness. Challenging aspects cause wantonness,  indiscretion, scandals, foolhardiness, destructiveness, cleverness, many anxious moments and self-seeking nature. A variable star adds a tendency to be argumentative, inconstant and unreliable. ^[6]

   Influence.   Of the nature of Mercury and Saturn. It gives a subtle mind, shamelessness, and loss through friends and companies. ^[5]

   BASIC INFLUENCES:   This star imparts to its natives a keen mentality, subtleness, shameless, and a wide acquaintance. Negatively it imparts a tendency towards making sudden, often fatal decisions, self-destruction, and cruelty. ^[6]

Left shoulder of Bootis: γ Bootis, according to tradition Jupiter-Saturn, but more likely Jupiter-Mars. In any case, its basic nature is Jupiterian. Cf. α Bootis (Arcturus), which also has a Jupiter-Mars nature. However, the proximity of Saturn’s exaltation dampens the Jupiter influence. ^[7]

On his left shoulder Boötes has the star γ Seginus, a word coming from Latin for corn-crop, and thus meaning a reaper or harvester. In some illustrations he holds a reaping sickle in his hand. To the Arabs it is Al Haris, the Guard or Protector. With its Mercury-Saturn simile it emphasizes the protective nature of Boötes, and ourselves. The planetary connotation also shows up well the potential for writing or public speaking in those who have it in their horoscopes. ^[8]

Fixed star Seginus rules the nerves of the right kidney. ^[9]

Asterism Zhaoyao

In Chinese astronomy, γ Boo is a single-star asterism named 招搖 Zhāoyáo “Twinkling Indicator.” It belongs to the 3rd Chinese lunar mansion, Di (Root).

The name Zhaoyao signifies “an enemy brandishing a spear and shield,” ^[10] which can translate as “an enemy armed with contradictions.” Literally, Zhāoyáo translates as “flaunting” or “ostentatious.” It still seems a long way from “Twinkling Indicator.”

Ma Duanlin (1317)

The single star Zhaoyao lies north of Genghe (Celestial Lance), near the tip of the Northern Dipper’s handle. It governs barbarian armies. If its horns (rays) change color or the star itself wavers, major warfare is imminent. ^[11]

Song History (1346)

The star Zhaoyao is located north of Genghe and governs northern armies or northern warfare. If it shows sharp rays or changes, large-scale military action will occur; if it is bright, war is imminent. If it aligns with the stars Dongxing, Genghe (Celestial Lance), and Beidou (Northern Dipper), a northern power will come to accept China’s authority. Another interpretation: if it moves, close ministers act recklessly; if it shifts from its usual position, the armory is opened for war, or military reserves are mobilized; a blue/green hue signifies worry or sorrow; white signifies the ruler’s anger; red signifies war; black signifies the defeat of the army; and yellow signifies peace throughout the world.

If a comet transgresses Zhaoyao, military activity stirs in the northern borderlands; if it appears near Zhaoyao, barbarian armies will rise up in great numbers. If a bōxīng (a hairy or hazy tailless comet) transgresses Zhaoyao, it signifies disorder or rebellion among the southern tribes and frontier peoples. If a guest star appears, barbarians or southern tribes will come to pay tribute; alternatively, it indicates war or mourning in the north. If a falling star (meteor) emerges from this region, war is imminent. If clouds or vapors transgress Zhaoyao: yellow-white signifies the death of a high-ranking figure; red signifies internal military strife; yellow signifies the cessation of hostilities; and white signifies sorrow for a great leader. ^[12]

BOÖTES.   The Herdman.
      Legend.   Boötes is said to be Arcas, whose mother Callisto was transformed into a bear (see URSA MAJOR) by Juno. While hunting, Arcas came upon his mother unawares in her form of a bear and pursued her into the temple of Jupiter, where he would have killed her and afterward been killed himself by the priests. In order to prevent this, Jupiter, who had taken pity on them, took them both into heaven, where Boötes is still seen pursing the Bear. According to another account Boötes is Icarius, who was killed by some shepherds he had made drunk with a flagon of wine given him by Bacchus. In consideration of the grief of his daughter Erigone and their hound Mæra, Jupiter placed her father in heaven as Boötes, together with herself as Virgo and the hound as Canis Minor.
      Influence.   According to Ptolemy the influence of the constellation is like that of Mercury and Saturn, though the star Arcturus is like Mars and Jupiter. It is said to give prosperity from work, strong desires, a tendency to excess, a fondness for rural pursuits, together with some liking for occultism. The Kabalists associate it with the Hebrew letter Teth and the 9th Tarot Trump, “The Hermit”. ^[5]

The Constellation of the Ploughman.
      Today this constellation is called Boötes (Boo). Its stars traditionally are said to have the nature of Mercury and Saturn (except Arcturus). The constellation is correlative of events concerning agriculture and the effects concerned with this constellation are notably delayed in coming about. ^[13]
