Fixed star Praesepe, M44, the Beehive Cluster, is a 4th magnitude open Star Cluster in the head of the Crab, Cancer Constellation.

The cluster has a visual brightness of magnitude 3.7. Its brightest stars are blue-white and of magnitude 6 to 6.5. 42 Cancri is a confirmed member.

A recent survey counts 1010 high-probability members, of which 68% are M dwarfs, 30% are Sun-like stars of spectral classes F, G, and K, and about 2% are bright stars of spectral class A. Also present are five giant stars, four of which have spectral class K0 III and the fifth G0 III.

Its age and proper motion coincide with those of the Hyades, suggesting they may share similar origins.

The traditional name Praesepe comes from the Latin word for Manger.

Praesepe Astrology

PRAESAEPE. 44 M Cancri. Praesaepe represents the manger of the asses ridden by Bacchus and Vulcan (see ASELLI). A coarse extended cluster situated on the head of the Crab. Popularly termed the Beehive, Manger or Crib, and known by the Chinese under the name Tseih She Ke, Exhalation of Piled-up Corpses. With the Aselli it was the “cloudy spot of Cancer” mentioned by Ptolemy as causing blindness. It is of the nature of Mars and the Moon, and causes disease, disgrace, adventure, insolence, wantonness, brutality, blindness, industry, order and fecundity; and makes its natives fortunate though liable to loss through others, and the founders of large businesses. ^[1]

PRAESAEPE. 44M Cancri. A mass of more than 40 stars. Praesaepe represents the burrows ridden by Bacchus and Vulcan. This star mass tends to make its natives insolent, adventurous, wanton, impulsive, restless, inclined towards dissipation, fortunate but liable to loss through others, eyesight problems, violence. ^[2]

The Praesepe, also known as the Beehive or the Manger, threatens mischief and blindness and is said to cause disease and disgrace. If the nebula is not visible in a clear sky it presages a violent storm. As with most of classical astrology much of the effects of the planets, signs, constellations, and fixed stars can only be gleaned through direct observation of their condition in the night sky. ^[3]

Presepe: Latin: “Crib,” star cluster in the constellation of Cancer, M44 Cancer, creates an uneven temperament, prone to choleric outbursts on the one hand and despondency on the other, unhealthy humors, with unfavorable Moon and Neptune alignments: danger of blood poisoning or abuse of intoxicants and narcotics. With a severely afflicted Moon: eye ailments, blindness. All this points to a Moon-Mars nature, but the fundamental force is Moon, not, as is sometimes stated, Mars, which is already shown by the tendency towards eye problems; cf. Alcyone and Pleiades.
      The Chinese called this star group the “ancestral spirits” and claimed that they gave, especially to people sensitive to the moon, strong connections to the realm of the dead and peculiar experiences in the spiritualist field, a mediumistic predisposition that could certainly harbor great dangers! ^[8]

Praesepe, the “manger”, a cluster of stars in Cancer, designates a part of the zodiac which since ages past has had a bad omen. Because the Aselli are so near, a total of five to eight degrees in Leo are hit by it. The Praesepe appears as a think stellar nebula and, in the telescope, is seen as an open cluster of vast expanse. There are about 500 stars of the 6th to 17th Magnitude with a diameter of 13 light years. The astral influence of these far-distant worlds is equivalent to a combination of a Moon-Mars emanation. Also acting is a Neptunian influence, both in Praesepe and in the Aselli. Elsbeth Ebertin pointed out that countless soldiers who became blind during World War I actually had in their cosmograms relevant connections to this fixed star. These days, opthamologists have enormous skills and many a case will not be as serious in its outcome, therefore, a conjunction to Praespe should not be feared so much. According to Vehlow, the Chinese gave this group of stars the name “the spirit of the ancestors”. ^[4]

Praesepe, or Praesaepe, is not one star but a whole cluster of some 75 of them, at a mean distance of some 520 light-years from us. It is easily seen on a good night, a faint misty patch about the size of the Pleiades. The name means ‘a Stable’ or ‘a Pen’ (for animals), and it may be considered the stable for the Aselli. The three stars, Praesepe and the Aselli, lie within 1°29′ overall, so that astrologically we must really take them as a single unit of their combined qualities: three parts Mars, two of the Sun and one of Moon in the celestial recipe book. Praesepe, then, adds the lunar ingredient, which we can define as (a) providing a home or base from which the Aselli operate and (b) giving a mundane effectiveness to the more remotely celestial qualities of the Donkeys. The busy atmosphere of the Beehive presents the same idea. But the inclusion of a lunar quality with the others also emphasizes the moody and unpredictable quality which we already saw from the siting of the Aselli in the Constellation of Cancer. People with the three of these stars strong in their horoscopes, favorably aspected, do show a capacity for cooperation with others, the secret of much of their success in life, symbolized by both the regime of a Beehive and by a Stable that is one home for two Donkeys. ^[5]

In Chinese astronomy, M44 is named Jishi, “Cumulative Corpses.” It sits at the center of the four stars of asterism Gui, “Ghost.” Gui represents a ghost carriage, with a white center containing accumulated corpse energy.

Those born under the Ghost Star are approachable, righteous, and easily popular. They are emotionally rich and experience significant life changes. They are upright and honest in their conduct, without any eccentricities, and possess great mental strength. Sometimes, they even choose to sacrifice themselves to help or save others. Ma Duanlin (1317)

The constellation Gui (Ghost) is square like a wooden cabinet, with a white center containing accumulated corpse energy. It governs death, disease, ancestral rites, the sun and moon, and also vision, enabling the discernment of treacherous schemes. 

When the Gui stars are bright, the six grains are harvested; when dim, people scatter. When they move and shine, taxes are heavy, and corvée labor is abundant; when the star moves, people are distressed, and government decrees are urgent.

Jishi desires to be dim and unclear for peace; when it is bright, war breaks out, ministers plot against the ruler, and the lower classes flee. The five stars of Gui (the Ghost Cart) govern the observation of treacherous schemes and are considered the “eye of heaven” (Tianmu).  The central star is Jishi, the “accumulation of corpses” (Praesepe), signifying death, mourning, and sacrifices; it is also called “Axe and Scythe” (Fu Tan), signifying executions and beheadings.

Jishi should be dim and unclear; if it is bright, war will break out, and high officials will be executed; if it moves and shines, taxes will be heavy and labor burdensome, causing resentment among the people.

A solar eclipse indicates national unrest, a major mourning, and sorrow among nobles. A solar halo indicates war in the area it occupies, and the execution or demotion of high officials.

A lunar eclipse indicates sorrow among nobles and the empress, lasting for a year. A lunar halo can also indicate drought or a pardon.

If the Moon transgresses Gui, the ruler of the Qin region suffers from worry; some sources say military generals die, high-ranking officials and female rulers face distress, while epidemics affect the people.

If Mercury transgresses Gui, the five grains do not mature or are harvested poorly; if it guards this region for an extended duration, mourning follows with concern affecting high-ranking individuals.

When Venus enters and transits Gui, there will be war and rebellious ministers within the state; it also signifies the impending execution of generals. If it passes through this region aggressively (guan zhi er nu), there will be rebellious ministers below. If it guards the constellation for a long time, there will be war below, drought, fire, and nothing will grow.

When Mars invades Gui, loyal ministers are executed; some sources say that warfare breaks out and the queen loses power. If it enters this region, both the empress and the prime minister are worried; alternatively, it signifies a traitor at the emperor’s side, war, and loss. If Mars stations here, the realm issues amnesty. If it remains here for ten days, feudal lords suffer consequences; if twenty days pass, the crown prince faces trouble. If Mars completes a full circuit around this region (gou si huanrao), the emperor loses ancestral temple rites or suffers from loss of imperial legitimacy.

If Jupiter transgresses Gui, crops are damaged, and famine follows, with the ruler neglecting state affairs; if it transgresses Jishi, law-enforcing ministers face execution.

When Saturn invades Gui, high-ranking ministers and the empress will suffer. If it guards this region for an extended time, the suffering will be in the inner palace, and there will be drought and earthworks. If it approaches Jihhi, the ruler will dislike it. If it transgresses Jishi, its position determines who is affected: in the yang direction (south) for the emperor, yin direction (north) for the empress, central position for the crown prince, and to the right side for high-ranking ministers; ill omens follow according to where it remains.

If a guest star transgresses Gui, those who rise to power without proper authority will fail; some sources say excessive earthworks projects occur. If it enters this area, matters related to curses, oaths, and ancestral temple rituals become prominent.

If a comet transgresses Gui, warfare erupts, and the realm becomes unstable or in turmoil; one should cultivate virtue and perform rituals to ward off evil.

When a meteor appears here, mourning events and military conflict occur beneath its influence; it is advisable to cultivate virtue and perform rituals to avert disaster. If meteors transgress Jishi, there are cases of people being executed or killed; if they enter this area instead, four foreign states come to pay tribute.

If white cloud formations enter Gui, epidemics arise; if black clouds appear, the empress is worried. Red-colored clouds indicate drought; yellow ones signify earthworks projects. Constellation Cancer the Crab

Ptolemy’s observations are as follows: “The two stars in the eyes of Cancer are of the same influence as Mercury, and are also moderately like Mars. Those in the claws are like Saturn and Mercury.” By the Kabalists Cancer is associated with the Hebrew letter Tzaddi and the 18th Tarot Trump “The Moon.” ^[1]

Cancer (Cnc), or the constellation of the Crab, presages thunderstorms, famine, and locusts. The stars in the eyes (according to Ptolemy) have a nature similar to that of Mercury and Mars; those in the claws to that of Saturn and Mercury; the nebula to that of Mars and the Moon; and the Asses to that of Mars and the Sun. ^[3]

Ascendant conjunct Praesepe: This afflicts the Native’s Body with red Choller [red bile], and Cholerick humours [hot and dry], with wounds in his Face, or hurt in the sight of his left Eye, restraint of Liberty, banishment, or an obscuring of himself for a time, wounds or hurts in his arms. The native may display much vitality, put all their energy behind any and all talents they possess, and no matter what they seek, once their minds are made up, they never give up seeking and striving to reach their self-set goals. Natives with this conjunction have an inborn drive that constantly pushes them forward. Negative Sun conjunctions may produce wantonness, insolence, and defiance. These natives may be very difficult to deal with and difficult to understand.
