Fixed Star Canopus

Constellation Argo Navis [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Canopus on July 6

Fixed star Canopus, Alpha Carinae, is a 1st magnitude single star marking the rudder on the Keel of the Ship, Constellation Carina (Argo Navis). Canopus is the second brightest star in the sky, after Sirius.
Magnitude −0.74, spectral type A9 II, color white, relatively slow spinner with a projected rotational velocity of 9 km/s. [1]

α Car is officially named Canopus.
From the ancient Greek name Κάνωβος (Ptolemy’s spelling), an untranslated proper name that was introduced rather late into Greek astronomy (perhaps in the 2nd century B.C.). There seem to be Egyptian influences in the name’s development. Reapplied in Renaissance times. [2]

α Carinae, ‑0.4, white.
Κάνωβος in the early orthography of the Greeks, apparently was first given to this star by Eratosthenes, but Κάνωπος later on by Hipparchos. Ptolemy used the former word, among his few star-names, which Halley and Flamsteed transcribed into Canobus; but it now universally is Canopus, Al Sufi’s translator having Kanupus as an Arabian adaptation of the Greek.
Aratos, Eudoxos, and Hipparchos also, designated it as Πηδάλιον, “the Rudder.” Ancient ships had a rudder on each side of the stern, in one of which our star generally was figured, thus differing from the modern maps that locate it in the bank of oars.
Our name for it is that of the chief pilot of the fleet of Menelaos, who, on his return from the destruction of Troy, 1183 B.C., touched at Egypt, where, twelve miles to the northeastward from Alexandria, Canopus died and was honored by a monument raised by his grateful master, giving his name to the city and to this splendid star, which at that time rose about 7½° above that horizon.
The foregoing derivation of the word Canopus is an early and popular one; but another, perhaps as old, and more probable is from the Coptic, or Egyptian, Kahi Nub, “Golden Earth.” Ideler claimed these words as also the source of other titles for Canopus, the Arabic Wazn, “Weight,” and Ḥaḍar, “Ground.”
Similarly the universal Arabic title was Suhail, from Al Sahl, “the Plain.” This word also was a personal title in Arabia, the symbol of what is brilliant, glorious, and beautiful, and even now among the nomads is thus applied to a handsome person. Our word Canopus itself apparently had a somewhat similar use among early writers.
Among the Persians Suhail is a synonym of wisdom, seen in the well-known Al Anwār i Suhaili, “the Lights of Canopus.”
Another occasional early title was Al Faḥl, “the Camel Stallion.” Allusions to it in every age indicate that everywhere it was an important star, especially on the Desert. There it was a great favorite, giving rise to many of the proverbs of the Arabs, their stories and superstitions, and supposed to impart the much prized color to their precious stones, and immunity from disease. Its heliacal rising, even now used in computing their year, ripened their fruits, ended the hot term of the summer, and set the time for the weaning of their young camels.
While all this knowledge of Canopus is ancient, it seems “but of yesterday” when we consider the star’s history in worship on the Nile. A series of temples at Edfū, Philae, Amada, and Semneh, so oriented at their erection, 6400 B.C., as to show Canopus heralding the sunrise at the autumnal equinox, when it was known as the symbol of Khons, or Khonsu, the first southern star-god; and of other similar temples later.
The Hindus called it Agastya, one of their Rishis, or inspired sages, — and helmsman of their Argha, — a son of Varuna, the goddess of the waters; and Sanskrit literature has many allusions to its heliacal rising in connection with certain religious ceremonies. In the Avesta it is mentioned as “pushing the waters forward” — governing the tides (?).
In China it was Laou Jin, the Old Man, and an object of worship down to at least 100 B.C.
Since the 6th century it has been the Star of Saint Catherine, appearing to the Greek and Russian pilgrim devotees as they approached her convent and shrine at Sinai, on their way from Gaza, their landing-place.[3]

In Chinese astronomy, α Car belongs to the asterism Lǎorén, “Old Man,” in the 22nd lunar mansion Jǐng,  “Well.” It is traditionally known as Lǎorén, “Old Man,” Lǎorénxīng, “Old Man Star,” Shòu Xīng, “God of Longevity,” and Nánjílǎorén, “Old Man in the South Pole.” [4]

Canopus was originally designated Alpha Argus (α Arg), but is now known as Alpha Carinae (α Car). In 1763, the Constellation Argo Navis (the Ship Argo) was divided into three smaller ones: Carina (the Keel), Puppis (the Poop Deck or Stern), and Vela (the Sails). They were officially recognized in 1930, and Argo Navis was declared obsolete. Astrologically, Carina, Puppis and Vela are still considered together as Argo Navis.

Canopus Astrology

Fixed star Canopus has the spectral class A9, indicating the planetary nature of Venus and Mercury.

VENUS-MERCURY:   Idealistic, psychic, handsome, neat, lovable, refined, genteel, intelligent. [5]

CANOPUS. α Argus.
Notes.   A white star in one of the oars of the ship Argo. Named in honor of Canopus, the chief pilot of the fleet of Menelaus, who was killed in Egypt by the bite of a serpent on his return from the destruction of Troy.
Influence.   According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter; and, to Alvidas, of the Moon and Mars. It gives piety, conservatism, a wide and comprehensive knowledge, voyages and educational work, and changes evil to good. [5]

CANOPUS. α Carinae.
A yellow star in the ship Argo. Named for Canopus, chief pilot of the fleet of Menalaos. Class: FO.
BASIC INFLUENCES:   Brings the native fame, good or bad; martial preferment, domestic or family problems. [6]

Canopus: A coastal city in ancient Egypt, at the Canopic Nile estuary, named α Argus navis (ship Argo), hence also called Argus. The ancients saw a ship in this region of the sky and claimed that the star was a patron saint of sailors and brought great voyages, especially sea voyages (and also legal proceedings), which will have to be verified. — With Saturn as the ruling planet of the birth chart in the 8th house: suicide. With Saturn well-placed, however, the star’s Saturnian influence may be less dangerous, as it is mitigated by Jupiter; it then acts in a purely spiritual octave. The Saturn and Jupiter forces of the star are then, as it were, brought to harmony in their higher vibrations. Vgl. S. 239. [7]

Canopus, Alpha in the Boat Argo.

Canopus was given this name because the ancient ones thought they saw a ship in this particular part of the heavens, and they believed it to be a wise step to relate it to their patron Canopus, the old Egyptian god who was the patron of skippers and voyagers. Combined in Canopus are powers ascribed to Jupiter and Saturn. Elsbeth Ebertin has recorded several cases of persons born in early July and between 5:00 and 6:00 am (Campous rising), who made extensive sea voyages.
Linked to a badly placed Saturn, the tendency to depression and even suicide is inherent. However, if Saturn and Jupiter are well placed in the chart, harmonizing and spiritual powers are evoked. According to tradition, Canopus on the Ascendant is supposed to give a love of travel and also to instigate fights and quarrels resulting in lawsuits; the native, however, can channel these tendencies constructively, with astuteness and a sense of real earnestness.
Links to the fixed star Canopus have been noted several times in the nativities of writers and film actors, and especially of those persons who, in our times, have had to undertake many journeys in connection with their position.
Film star Emil Jannings has Canopus conjunction Venus. Maria Schell has Canopus conjunction Pluto and opposition the Sun, writer H. (Heinz) Piontek has Canopus conjunction Pluto = Venus/Jupiter. Mata Hari, the spy had in her nativity this fixed star conjunction Venus = Saturn/Jupiter = Saturn/MC. In Ingrid Bergman’s map, unpleasant experiences in her marriages are indicated in the conjunction Saturn = Moon/Mars.
On the other hand, Canopus conjunction Sun is found with the communist woman Klara (Clara) Zetkin, conjunction Moon (Sun) with the poet Hermann Hesse, and conjunction Mercury with the psychologist (Carl) Jung. [8]

Canopus was worshipped on the Nile as early as 6400 B.C. Astrologically it is correlative of events concerning the sea and shipping and of rivers and springs. It also has been said to be connected with death by drowning, especially if connected with the eighth house. It promises immunity from disease and indicates unrequited love when connected with Venus. It also gives piety and changes evil to good. [9]

Canopus, α star of Carina the hull, and once the α of the whole ship, is a truly brilliant sight, but 53° below the equator. Honored by Ptolemy with a Saturn-Jupiter simile, the name has two possible origins: first, Canopus, or Kanobos, was the chief navigator of the Greek fleet that sacked Troy, 1183 BC, and who died near Alexandria, Egypt, some years later. A monument was erected to him there, and in fact a town was renamed after him. The site is close to the present Aboukir, scene of famous naval battles ever since. In due course, it is said, it was Ptolemy who named the great star in Argo after him also.
But a still earlier source of the name is the Coptic-Egyptian Kahi-Nub, Golden Earth, with a truly alchemical connotation. And with this star practically on the center-line of Cancer, 14°58′, and conjunct with the wondrous Sirius, what better hope of mastery of Life can one ask than to have these two promising symbols well placed and aspected on one’s horoscope. Only let it not be forgotten that the quest for the Golden Fleece is still an arduous journey, even for those who will actually find it. Not all the stars together can bestow it without the questor earning it for him or herself. [10]

Fixed star Canopus rules the left side below the breast. [11]

The Old Man Star

The 22nd Chinese lunar mansion is named 井宿 Jǐng Su, “Well Mansion.” It is the 1st of the 7 mansions of the Vermilion Bird of the South.
The 22nd asterism of the Well Mansion is called 老人 Lǎorén, “Old Man.” It represents the Old Man of the South Pole, also known as the God of Longevity. It contains only one star, Canopus. [4]

Canopus is called Lao Ren Xing, “Old Man Star.” It is auspicious and symbolizes good fortune, happiness and a long life.

Canopus Personality Traits.
Canopus in your natal chart gives good fortune and longevity. On the surface, you may appear lazy, but once you have a goal, you’ll enthusiastically get to work, truly embodying the saying, “Silent until the moment of truth, then a resounding success.” However, your enthusiasm is difficult to sustain. Furthermore, you dislike group activities.

Canopus Relationships.
Before finding true love, you will encounter various types of people of the opposite sex, resulting in a rich romantic history. However, you will ultimately find a very happy relationship. The right person for you is someone who can honestly point out your flaws and mistakes.
If you are female, your charm lies in your gentle nature and long, flowing hair. If you are male, your charm lies in your handsomeness and masculinity. [12]

Ma Duanlin (1317)

The star Old Man is located south of the Bow and Arrows and is also called the South Pole. It is usually seen at dawn on the Autumn Equinox and sets at dusk on the Spring Equinox. It is usually observed in the southern suburbs at the Autumn Equinox. If it is bright and large, the ruler will have a long life and the world will be at peace; if it is not seen, the ruler will be worried. [13]

Song History (1346)

Laoren (Old Man) consists of one star located south of Hushi (Bow and Arrows); it is also known as Nanji (Southern Pole). It typically appears at dawn on the day of the Autumnal Equinox in the direction of Bing (South), observed from the southern suburbs; it disappears by dusk on the evening of the Vernal Equinox toward the direction of Ding (Southwest).
If this star appears, it signifies a well-governed and peaceful realm with the emperor enjoying longevity; if it does not appear, warfare erupts, harvests fail, and the ruler suffers from worry.
If a guest star enters Laoren, epidemics affect the people; some sources say warfare erupts, and elders face distress or sorrow.
If meteors transgress this star, many elderly individuals fall ill; some sources indicate that warfare arises instead.
If white cloud formations intrude into the Laoren (Old Man) region, the nation faces a period of decline or even extinction. [14]

God of Longevity.
Canopus was given the symbol of longevity because of its constant position. It was worshiped by emperors throughout history and used to predict the Emperor’s longevity.
Worship of Canopus as the God of Longevity conveys the cultural connotations of the Chinese people’s tradition of respecting, honoring, and filial piety toward the elderly, as well as etiquette in daily life. [15]

Shou-Xing

Shou Xing, God of Longevity

The God of Longevity is depicted as an old man in a commoner’s attire, with white hair, a youthful face, and a kind, benevolent expression. He has a crooked cane that is always taller than his head, and is often served by two children. [12]
The Ming Dynasty novel Journey to the West describes the God of Longevity as holding a lingzhi mushroom, with a long head, large ears, and a short body. In paintings, he is depicted as an old man with a white beard and prominent forehead, often accompanied by deer, cranes, and peaches, all of which symbolize long life. [16]

Taosim.
Taoists believe that the God of Longevity will descend to earth at certain times to enlighten people and bring good fortune. [12] As a symbol of the Taoist belief in the pursuit of immortality, popular belief holds that worshipping this deity can bring health and longevity. [16]

Canopus is one of the Sanxing, “Three Stars,” known as Fu Lu Shou. They are the gods of the three celestial bodies considered essential in Chinese astrology and mythology.

  1. Jupiter governs Fu (Fortune)
  2. Mizar governs Lu (Prosperity)
  3. Canopus governs Shou (Longevity) [17]

Constellation Argo

ARGO NAVIS. The Ship Argo.
Legend.   This constellation represents the ship in which Jason brought the Golden Fleece from Colchis, said to be the first ship ever built.
Influence.   According to Ptolemy the bright stars are like Saturn and Jupiter. Argo is said to give prosperity in trade and voyages, and strength of mind and spirit, but it has been observed to accompany cases of drowning, a notable instance being furnished by the horoscope of Shelley, where Argo occupied the 8th house and contained the Sun, Venus and Uranus. Drowning is particularly to be feared when Saturn afflicts the Moon in or from Argo. It is probably on account of this constellation that Virgo, especially the first decanate, is frequently found to be connected with drowning.
Argo was sub-divided by Lacaille into Carina, The Keel; Malus, The Mast; Puppis, The Poop; and Vela, the Sails: but the separate influence, if any, of these divisions is not known.
Magical.   Gives security on the waters. [5]

Argo is the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece is today composed of the constellations Carina, Puppis, Pyxis, and Vela. In classical astrology, it is correlative of events concerning the sea and shipping and of rivers and springs. It also has been said to be connected with death by drowning, especially if connected with the eighth house. Tetrabiblos asserts that its bright stars are of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. [9]

Preferment in writings, sports, religion and affairs associated with the public. The native may receive high honors but are subject to reversals, either business or domestic. Natives with this conjunction who are religiously oriented will tend to use religion for business purposes, and this may exhibit itself as a healer or a religious leader. [6]

This is a similar energy to Venus. They have family-oriented ties with others who delight in giving these individuals a helping hand towards success. In return, however, they give back very little to those who have helped them. They do not harm others, but are simply looking out for themselves. They do not use any effort in controlling how things are done but just depend on others to bring about their security. They are in the habit of consuming rich foods and do not take the time to develop a good diet plan. They simply accept whatever food others offer them. [11]

Saturn conjunct Canopus: Discontented, occult interests, unfavorable for reputation and domestic matters, little prominence but may do good. [5]

Linked to a badly placed Saturn, the tendency to depression and even suicide is inherent. However, if Saturn and Jupiter are well placed in the chart, harmonizing and spiritual powers are evoked. [7]

This puts the natives in a position where others depend on them for help, financial and otherwise. These are the persons who are left “holding the bag”. They give so much to others that their own finances are at the minimum. There is a restriction here so that these persons are unable to develop their own success. Others benefit at the expense of these individuals. This can cause physical problems such as cysts developing in the chest and stomach areas. [11]

Ingrid Bergman 0°32′,David Beckham 0°34′, Augusto Pinochet 2°00′‚ Mel B 2°06′, Sarah Paulson 2°19′, Drew Barrymore 2°20′, Mary Shelley 2°34′.

  1. Thanks Jamie
How would you read Canopus’ influence if there is a conjunction or stellium but only one of the planets is within orb?

    • The Stellium should increase the orb for the fixed star as it does for the planets. You might also have to consider Sirius.

  2. Yeah, Sirius is within orb too and one of the planets involved in the stellium is the almuten. I’m tired of this life.

    • I don’t use horoscopic rules like altumen, see Precession Astrology. Sometimes people who have had many incarnations can feel this way at times. Are you going through a rough patch with transits?

  3. Would Sirius and Canopus have any effect on the Sun/Moon midpoint? My mid point is 13Degrees30 in Cancer. Thanks

  4. The time of rising of Agastya-Canopus for
each country should be determined by calculation
and announced by an astronomer. Now, for
Ujjayini (INDIA), it takes place when the Sun’s true
position is 7° short of Sign Virgo (Kanyā).

  5. Any thoughts on Canopus conjunct the IC (16*02 Cancer), opposite Uranus (15*19 Capricorn), MC, and Neptune (16*53 Capricorn)?

This is my chart, and my mother’s Ascendant is conjunct my IC, so Canopus conjuncts her Asc (and the asteroid Dejanira in her chart). You’re not kidding with those legal problems. ????

    Thank you in advance! 🙂

  6. what would Canopus conjunct the IC (12*21 Cancer) mean ? cant seem to find it anywhere online

    • No you won’t find any star conjunction to the IC. I would think the “piety, conservatism, a wide and comprehensive knowledge, voyages and educational work, and changes evil to good” may apply to your maternal ancestry or your past lives. Perhaps the Midheaven interpretations also.

      • thanks so much for replying ! was adopted at 3 months old so dont get to know of my ancestry .didnt gain access to my birthtime until oregon released my right to get certificate of live birth for adoptees a few years back .since then ,its opened a ton of doors learning my astrology …learning something new every day !

  7. this fixed star directly opposes my 14 degree sun-uranus conjunction during a jan 4 new moon. i def ghost this aspect and sacrifice it for all

  8. Hi Jamie, thanks for all your work in posting these fixed stars! I notice that Canopus conjunct Venus seems contradictory – the first paragraph is pretty negative, but if you keep reading, it sounds positive! First scandal through intrigue and public disgrace and then suddenly the Venus person is loving and nurturing and loved by all…
