θ Gem, ο Gem and π Gem belonged to the obsolete constellation Telescopium Herschelii.

α Gem is officially named Castor, from a character in Greek mythology.

β Gem is officially named Pollux, from a character in Greek mythology.

γ Gem is officially named Alhena, possibly meaning “the Mark on the Neck of a Camel.”

δ Gem is officially named Wasat, meaning “Middle.”

ε Gem is officially named Mebsuta.
      From an abbreviation of the indigenous Arabic asterism name dhirā‘ al-asad al mabsūṭa, “the Lion’s Outstretched Paw,” for one of the two pairs α/β Gem or α/β CMi. These pairs were assigned to the larger indigenous Arabic asterism al-asad, but there is no unanimity in the Arabic sources as to which pair was the “outstretched” or “folded” paw. “Mebsuta” was arbitrarily applied as a star name to ε Gem in recent times.
      In its indigenous location stretching from parts of Gemini all the way into Virgo, the indigenous Arabic al-asad, “the Lion,” corresponded to what in other cultures was Leo among the zodiacal signs. Subsequently the modern Arabs used the indigenous name for the smaller Greek Lion (Leo). [1]
      ε Gem belongs to the Chinese asterism Jǐng, “Well.” It is known as Jǐngsuwǔ, “5th star of Well.” [2]

ζ Gem is officially named Mekbuda.
      From an abbreviation of the indigenous Arabic asterism name dhirā‘ al-asad al maqbūda, “the Lion’s Folded Paw,” (see ε Gem). Arbitrarily applied as a star name in recent times. [1]
      ζ, Variable, 3.7 to 4.5, pale topaz. Mekbuda is from Al Maḳbūḍah, “Contracted,” the Arabic designation for the drawn-in paw of the ancient Asad; but some, with less probability, derive it from Al Mutakabbidah, “a Culminating Star.” [3]
      ζ Gem belongs to the Chinese asterism Jǐng, “Well.” It is known as Jǐngsuqī, “7th star of Well.” [2]

η Gem is officially named Propus, meaning “Forward Foot.”

θ Gem is sometimes called Nageba, derived from the Arabic Al-Tawa’man Al-Najibah, “the royal twins,” indicating that the Gemini twins were considered to be the twin sons of a king. [4]
      θ Gem belongs to the Chinese asterism Wuzhūhóu, “Five Feudal Kings.” It is known as Wuzhūhóuyī, “ 1st star of Five Feudal Kings,” Dishī, ”Imperial Tutor,” and Tiānjiēnánxīn, ”Star in the south of Celestial Street constellation.” [2]

      λ Gem belongs to the Chinese asterism Jǐng, “Well.” It is known as Jǐngsubā, “8th star of Well.” [2]

μ Gem is officially named Tejat, of unknown meaning (astrologers call it Tejat Posterior).

ν Gem has the proper name Nucatai.
      The group of stars γ, μ, ν, η, and ξ Gem, in the feet of the Twins, was the 4th manzil Al Hanʽah, a “Brand,” or “Mark,” on the right side of a camel’s, or horse’s neck. It was defined by Al Bīrūnī as “Winding,” as though the stars of this station were winding around each other, or curving from the central star; and they were Al Nuḥātai, the dual form of Al Nuḥāt, “a Camel’s Hump,” itself a curved line. [3]
      ν Gem belongs to the Chinese asterism Jǐng, “Well.” It is known as Jǐngsùèr, “2nd star of Well.” [2]

ξ Gem is officially named Alzir.
      ξ Gem was Al Bīrūnī’s Al Zirr, “the Button.” With γ, μ, ν, and η Gem, in the feet of the Twins, was the 4th manzil Al Hanʽah, a “Brand,” or “Mark,” and they were Al Nuḥātai, the dual form of Al Nuḥāt, “a Camel’s Hump,” itself a curved line. [3]

Soft Gemini to easier Arts incline
For softer Studies fit an Infant Sign.
They tune rough Words, or they incline to Sing,
To stop the Pipe, or strike the speaking String;
Through Reeds they blow the Natural Sound in Measure,
Gay their delight, and e’en their Pains are Pleasure;
Wars they avoid, Old Age they chace with Song,
And when Late Death o’retakes them they are Young.
Sometimes to Heaven they mount, and trace the Stars,
Then fix in Globes, or turn the Signs in Spheres;
Their Wit reigns o’re their Nature, and refines
Its Powers; This is the influence of the Twins. [10]

From the Twins come less laborious callings and a more agreeable way of life, provided by varied song and voices of harmonious tone, slender pipes, the melodies inborn in strings and the words fitted thereto: those so endowed find even work a pleasure. They would banish the arms of war, the trumpet’s call, and the gloom of old age: theirs is a life of ease and unfading youth spent in the arms of love. They also discover paths to the skies, complete a survey of the heavens with numbers and measurements, and outstrip the flight of the stars [by their ability to predict the stars’ movement]: nature yields to their genius, which it serves in all things. So many are the accomplishments of which the Twins are fruitful. [11]

ASCENDING

But when their Feet the rising Twins do shew
And half appear Above, half lye Below,
The Births are happy, all their Parts refind,
And Arts enrich the Treasures of the Mind;
Ready their Wit, persuasive is their Tongue,
In Musick skill’d, and excellent in Song;
These are the Powers their rising Rays dispense,
They Wit bestow, and fix that Wit with Sense. [10]

When ocean displays and conceals equal portions of the Twins, it will bestow zeal for study and direct men to learned arts. It creates no gloomy dispositions, but hearts imbued with a pleasant charm, and furnishes them with blessings of voice and tuneful lyre, combining with wit a dowry of melody. [11]

Ptolemy (@150 AD)

Of the stars in Gemini, those in the feet share the same quality as Mercury and, to a less degree, as Venus; the bright stars in the thighs, the same as Saturn; of the two bright stars in the heads, the one in the head in advance the same as Mercury; it is also called the star of Apollo; the one in the head that follows, the same as Mars; it is also called the star of Hercules. [12]

Maternus (@335 AD)

      I.8   Ascendant in Gemini.  If the horoscope is found in Gemini, he will be placed in the first beginnings of life and will always be comforted by his parents. He will certainly always be imbued with celestial secrets and will be bound by the faithful friendships of his ancestors, and he will give his patrimony <through> . If the MC. card is in Pisces, he will establish his life in a watery place and will possess patrimony from a moist substance, and his livelihood will be conferred on him from the resources of others, and either his power or his patrimony will be divided between two cities.
      9.   If the setting is found in Sagittarius, some destruction will be brought about by him either to his brothers or relatives, and his mind will be tormented by the greatest anxieties at various times. He will have enemies and, having abandoned his homeland, will dwell among foreign nations, but returning later to his paternal home he will think himself restored by the protection of the gods. If the axis is in Virgo IMC., from an early age he will be shaken by various continuations of labors, but with the progress of time he will achieve the greatest increases in happiness. But these will come to each person according to the measure of his procreation, which in all things, as we have frequently said, you must observe.

      III.9   Saturn in Gemini. If Saturn is found in Gemini, he will shake the early years with dangers and illnesses , and will make them free from all dangers, difficult to be freed. Those will certainly be the more dangerous distinctions which have been imposed in the ebdomatic and enneatic years. But he will have dangerous times in the birth of any person in whom Saturn is thus found, up to the age of 23. But let him beware of illnesses in these years, especially when Mars is in the square sides of this sign. For he will have troubles, conflicts, illnesses, and oppositions , and will often be engaged in great labors.
      10.   He will also obtain nothing great from his paternal or maternal substance, but he will himself obtain all increases in dignity and patrimony by his own strength . But he will be weighed down by the burdens of labor and unhappiness for as long as Saturn passes through Cancer, Libra, Aries, and their squares. Then, however, he will prosper in all things, when Saturn has broken his first station in Leo or Capricorn. Saturn, placed in Gemini, will also create vices, and in causes, he will determine the greatest adversaries. It also causes rapid and frequent losses of patrimony, so that he is frequently thrown into various conflicts in life, and when he has come to the extremes of life’s perils, afterwards he causes him to be appointed to great affairs by the command of some power, and he will associate with famous and powerful men for the sake of honor of virtue. He will certainly be famous and noble in all his actions, and he will constantly travel and be transferred to various regions.
      11.   But a virgin wife will not be given to him. But if the testimony of Jupiter happens to be a virgin. He will give a wife, or be separated from her by divorce or by the danger of death. He will certainly be without children or will have one son. But when Saturn approaches the sign of Scorpio, then he will be happy and glorious and wealthy. But even then he will be allotted a widowed wife, with whom he will persevere without any disagreement or quarrel until the last day.
      12.   Many things will also be entrusted to him and he will ask for many things , and he will have many quarrels with more powerful men, and from those quarrels he will be in danger, unless the star Jupiter, running well in procreation at that time, mitigates the dangers of these dangers. For there will be those who have Saturn in this way, who will always be opposed to great and powerful men, always applying the protection of inferiors to themselves, and will frequently be placed in free custody. They will nourish their hair because of the inconvenience of someone’s friendship or because of the unfortunate death or loss of someone. But when they have been shaken by various dangers and dangers, then they are lifted up by the increase of prosperity and happiness, so that they may obtain both praise and patrimony, and that a sudden inheritance may come to them. For then they will obtain riches and the dominions of the greatest foundations.

      IV.7.   Jupiter in Gemini. Whoever has Jupiter in Gemini will be always adorned with the greatest glories and powers, with friendships and favors , and when they have sought many things, they lose them again, and their life is constantly changing. For in the prime of life they will be in dissensions and in many troubles and in losses and in distresses and in sicknesses, and they will have constant sorrows about their wife and children, as long as they have completed forty-five years of age. For within this period of time, whatever they have , if they do not decide to have children, *** whatever they have is wasted.
      8.
But when this time has been measured, then they will have knowledge, then they will have the support of their means. They will have disagreements with their wives at first, but afterwards they will possess successful marriages, *** in public places and from these they will receive signs of happiness. But these are determined according to the measure of procreation and according to the mixtures and radiations of the other stars, which it will be fitting for you to observe and remember in all <procreations>. [13]

Allen (1889)

Gemini, the Twins,
      Astrologers assigned to this constellation guardianship over human hands, arms, and shoulders; while Albumasar held that it portended intense devotion, genius, largeness of mind, goodness, and liberality. With Virgo it was considered the House of Mercury, and thus the Cylenius tour of Chaucer; and a fortunate sign, ruling over America, Flanders, Lombardy, Sardinia, Armenia, Lower Egypt, Brabant, and Marseilles; and, in ancient days, over the Euxine Sea and the river Ganges. High regard, too, was paid to it in the 17th century as being peculiarly connected with the fortunes of the south of England and the city of London; for the Great Plague and Fire of 1665 and 1666 occurred when this sign was in the ascendant, while the building of London Bridge and other events of importance to the city were begun when special planets were here. But two centuries previously it was thought that whoever happened to be born under the Twins would be “ryght pore and wayke and lyfin mykul tribulacion.” Chinese astrologers asserted that if this constellation were invaded by Mars, war and a poor harvest would ensue.
      Ampelius assigned to it the care of Aquilo, the North Wind, the Greek Boreas that came from the north one third east. Its colors were white and red like those of Aries, and it was the natal sign of Dante, who was born on the 14th of May, 1265, when the sun entered it for the first time in that year. The sign’s symbol, ♊, has generally been considered the Etrusco-Roman numeral, but Seyffert thinks it a copy of the Spartans’ emblem of their Twin Gods carried with them into battle. [3]

Gemini Constellation, Bullinger

Bullinger (1893)

The Sign GEMINI (The Twins).
      All the pictures of this sign are confused. The Greeks claimed to have invented them, and they called them Apollo and Hercules. The Latins called them Castor and Pollux, and the name of a vessel in which Paul sailed is so called in Acts 28:11. The name in the ancient Denderah Zodiac is Clusus, or Claustrum Hor, which means the place of Him who cometh. It is represented by two human figures walking, or coming. The second appears to be a woman. The other appears to be a man. It is a tailed figure, the tail signifying He cometh.
      The old Coptic name was Pi-Mahi, the united, as in brotherhood. Not necessarily united by being born at the same time, but united in one fellowship or brotherhood. The Hebrew name is Thaumim, which means united. The root is used in Exodus 26:24 “They (the two boards) shall be coupled together beneath.” In the margin we read, “Heb. twinned” (RV double). The Arabic Al Tauman means the same.

We need not trouble ourselves with the Grecian myths, even though we can see through them the original and ancient truth. The two were both heroes of peculiar and extraordinary birth–sons of Jupiter. They were supposed to appear at the head of armies; and as they had cleared the seas of pirates, they were looked upon as the patron saints of navigation. (Hence the name of the ship in Acts 28:11). They were held in high esteem both by Greeks and Romans; and the common practice of taking oaths and of swearing by their names has descended even to our own day in the still surviving vulgar habit of swearing “By Gemini!”
      The more ancient star-names help us to see through all these and many other myths, and to discern Him of whom they testify; even Him in His twofold nature–God and Man–and His twofold work of suffering and glory, and His twofold coming in humiliation and in triumph. There are 85 stars in the sign: two of the 2nd magnitude, four of the 3rd, six of the 4th, etc.
      The name of α (in the head of one) is called Apollo, which means ruler, or judge; while β (in the head of the other) is called Hercules, who cometh to labour, or suffer. Another star, γ (in his left foot), is called Al Henah, which means hurt, wounded, or afflicted. Can we have a doubt as to what is the meaning of this double presentation? In Ophiuchus we have the two in one person: the crushed enemy, and the wounded heel. But here the two great primeval truths are presented in two persons; for the two natures were one Person, “God and man in one Christ.” As man, suffering for our redemption; as God, glorified for our complete salvation and final triumph. A star, ε (in the centre of his body), is called Waset, which means set, and tells of Him who “set His face like a flint” to accomplish this mighty Herculean work; and, when the time was come, “steadfastly set His face to go” to complete it.
      He bears in his right hand (in some pictures) a palm branch. Some pictures show a club; but both the club or bow are in repose! These united ones are neither in action nor are they preparing for action, but they are at rest and in peace after victory won. The star η (in the knee of the other, “Apollo”) is called Mebsuta, which means treading under feet. The names of other stars have come down to us with the same testimony. One is called Propus (Hebrew), the branch, spreading; another is called Al Giauza (Arabic), the palm branch; another is named Al Dira (Arabic), the seed, or branch. [14]

GEMINI. The Twins.
   Legend.   The constellation represents Castor and Pollux, the twin sons of Leda and Jupiter. It has also been suggested that it may represent Apollo and Hercules.
   Influencce.   Ptolemy makes the following observations; the stars in the feet of Gemini have an influence similar to that of Mercury, and moderately to that of Venus; the bright stars in the thighs are like Saturn. It is said to cause trouble and disgrace, sickness, loss of fortune, affliction and danger to the knees. By the Cabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Qoph and the 19th Tarot Trump, The Sun”. [15]

Noonan (1984)

Gemini, the Twins were placed in the sky by Jove in reward for their brotherly love so strongly manifested while on Earth. In classical days, the sign was often symbolized by two stars over a ship. For their efficient aid in protecting their fellow Argonauts in the storm that nearly overwhelmed the Argo, the Gemini were considered by the Greeks as propitious to mariners. In Acts xxviii:11 we read:
      “And after three months, we sailed in a ship of Alexandria that had wintered in the island, and whose figurehead was the ‘Heavenly Twins’.”
      Jove appointed the Twins as the guardians of Rome, and they generally appeared on all silver coinage of the Republic from about 269 B.C. That the Gemini were invoked by the Greeks and Romans in war as well as in storm as it attested in Macaulay’s Lays of Ancient Rome that so stirred the schoolboys’ heart in the days of classical education.
      Those born within the sign of Gemini will be crafty in the good sense of the word, in all their works and in all their tasks. Among them will be writers, mathematicians, astronomers, and famous sages. They will be truthful individuals and moderate in their fear of God. In terms of children, the Geminis are specially charged with the production of twins.  The sign was given the name of “many faced” in ancient times because it denotes not only twins but three or more children in a single birth.
      In physical appearance the Geminian will be of medium height, good appearance with a fine face, sharp-sighted with broad shoulders and a strong voice. Their hair will be curly and the eyes beautiful. Al-Biruni adds that the shanks will be long in comparison with the forearm. Modern astrologers say that the native of the Gemini will have a youthful appearance all through life, a slender build, a springy walk and an alert expression.
      The Gemini produces a generous and chaste personality. Individuals excelling in games and fond of philosophy and astronomy are also indicative of the Gemini, as are those who are magnanimous, munificent, and (sometimes) violent. The first decanate indicates those who are not irascible, those who will suffer from overwork, and those who are unlucky in their dealings with the opposite sex; the second decanate is correlative of those with pleasing speech, well bred, noble, and those who associate with people in high places; the third indicates those who are sexually promiscuous, those who use vulgar language, and those who prevariacte.
      Modern astrologers attribute the following to Gemini: clever, intuitive, restless, heartless, undependable, inquisitive, lack of perseverance, and sometimes too clever.
      Classicists say that the Geminian follow the professions of kings, calculators, teachers, hunters, dancers, musicians, painters and tailors. The Modernists add: journalists, novelists, lecturers, linguists, commercial travelers, and pupils. [17]

Noonan (1990)

The Constellation of the Twins
      The favorable effects of Gemini (Gem), the sign of mariners and storms at sea, have already been mentioned in Classical Scientific Astrology, 1984 [See below]. The constellation of the Twins also portends an intense devotion to others, genius, largeness of mind, goodness, and liberality. The constellation has been particularly connected with the fortunes of the south of England and the City of London. The Great Plague and Fire of 1665 and 666 occurred when this constellation was in the Ascendant. The building of London Bridge and other events of importance to the city were begun when the correlative planets were in the constellation. Chinese astrologers asserted that if this constellation were invaded by Mars, war and a poor harvest would ensue. Ptolemy writes:
      “Of the stars in Gemini, those in the feet share the same quality as mercury and, to a lesser degree, as Venus; the bright stars in the thighs the same as Saturn; of the two bright stars in the heads, the one in advance the same as Mercury; it is also the star called Apollo (Castor); the one in the head that follows, the same as Mars; it is also called the star of Hercules (Pollux).” [18]
