Fixed star Zosma, Delta Leonis (δ Leo), is a 3rd-magnitude single star on the back of the Lion, Leo Constellation.
      Magnitude 2.56 (Delta Scuti variable), spectral type A5IV(n), color white. δ Leo is a fast spinner, with a projected rotational velocity of 180 km/s. ^[1]

δ Leo is officially named Zosma.
      From the Greek word ζώσμα, “girdle, or loin cloth.” In Renaissance times this word was erroneously said to have been used to describe δ Leo in a medieval Greek text. Correctly, the text has óσφυς, “hip, or lower back” (after Pteolmry). The name “Zosma” *transliterated from the erroneous Greek word) was applied as a star name to δ Leo in recent times
  or Duhr. Applied in recent times from an abbreviation of its modern Arabic name zahr al-asad, “the Lion’s back.” ^[2]

δ, Coarsely triple, 2.7, 13, and 9, pale yellow, blue, and violet.
      Zosma and Zozma are from ζῶσμα, an occasional form of ζῶμα, “the Girdle,” found in the Persian Tables; but it propriety as a stellar title is doubtful, for the star is on the Lion’s rump, near the tail.
      Ulug Beg very correctly termed it Al Ṭhahr al Asad, the Lion’s Back, which has become Duhr and Dhur of modern catalogues.
      With θ, on the hind quarter, it constituted the 9th manzil, Al Zubrah, “the Mane,” and itself bears this name as Zubra, — strange titles for star and station so far away from that feature of the animal. δ and θ also were Al Kāhil al Asad, the Space between the Shoulders of the Lion; and Al Ḣarātān, sometimes transcribed Chortan, and translated the “Two Little Ribs,” or the two Khurt, or Holes, penetrating into the interior of the Lion; but all these seem as inapplicable as are the other titles.
      In India they marked the corresponding nakshatra, Pūrva Phalgunī, δ being the junction star between the two Phalgunī asterisms.
      On the Euphrates they were Kakkab Kua, the constellation of the god Kua, the Oracle; and in Egypt, according to Hewitt, Mes‑su, “the Heart of Su.” In Sogdiana they were Wadha, “the Wise;” in Khorasmia, Armagh, “the Great;” and with the Copts Pikhōrion, “the Shoulder.”
      In China δ was Shang Seang, the Higher Minister of State. ^[3]

δ Leo belongs to the Chinese asterism Tai Wei You Yuan, “Right Wall” of the “Supreme Palace Enclosure.” Its astronomical name is Tai Wei You Yuan Wu, “Taiwei Right Wall Five,” and it represents Xī Shang Xiang, “The First Western Minister.” ^[4]

Fixed star Zosma has the spectral type A5, indicating the planetary nature of Venus.

Anonymous of 379 AD said Zosma resembles Saturn and Venus. ^[5]

    Influence.  Of the nature of Saturn and Venus. It causes benefit by disgrace, selfishness, egotism, immorality, meanness, melancholy, unhappiness of mind and fear of poison, and gives an unreasonable, shameless and egotistical nature. ^[6]

ZOSMA.   δ Leonis.
    A white star, spectral class A2, at a distance of 68 light years. This star is located on the Lion’s back and nearby are two additional stars, one yellow and the other blue of magnitudes 13.0 and 9.0, respectively.
    BASIC INFLUENCES:   Native has a ‘love of life’, gains power to win over others, sudden fame and sudden losses, grandly liberal, changeable, subject to losses, unhappiness of mind, unknown fears, is shameless, egotistical. ^[7]

Zosma, Delta Leonis.

Zosma, on the Back of the Lion, has a Saturn-Venus nature. Its reputation is that of giving an alert mind, but also an inclination to melancholic moods. Conjunct a malefic, danger by poison and disease of the intestinal tract are indicated. These interpretations have to be considered with utmost caution and restraint. [8]

The Venusian star Zosma indicates those who have the ability to prophesy. On the Euphrates the star, along with Coxa, was the god Kua, the Oracle. In medieval times this star was also considered to portend many of the problems connected with the planetary Venus. [9]

Variously called Dhur or Zosma in most books and lists. Dhur derives from A; Thahr, the Back, or Al Thuhur, The Backs, since this star, δ Leonis, is sometmies given plurally with θ Leonis: the pair of them are situated almost one above the other on the Lion’s hindquarters.
      The alternative name Zosma is a Greek rendering of an old Persian name meaning Girdle. Sill other names have been included Al Kahil Al Asad, the part of the back between the shoulder blades, and (for the two stars together) Al H‘aratan – the two small ribs. Even Al Zubrah, another word for the name, has been applied to both stars at some times. We must assume from all this that the Lion has not always been seen the way we see it now. Possibly it was depicted sitting upright, and enlarged to include at least some of what is now Leo Minor, above the present constellation. It matters not overmuch: Dhur (Thur, with Th as in Then) or Zosma, if that is easier to say, are the common titles now.
      It is well visible to the naked eye, Mag 2.58, and it is in fact a tight group of three stars to make it optically a ‘triple’. It has Ptolemy’s fairly unusual classification as a Saturn-Venus type, like Denebola not too far from it, and must therefore be considered as of somewhat the same nature. It holds a position of quite some strength in the Lion’s anatomy (along with θ, of course) and can thus be seen as a source of strength in a horoscope – a source to be used in the very practical manner of its placing in (Virgo), where it has been since about 1050 AD, showing a somewhat critical turn of mind but with a constructive intent behind it so long as the aspect and the planet on it in the horoscope are in harmony with it.
      If that not be the case then Dhur-Zosma is calling for the cultivation of constructiveness is the subject of the horoscope wants to live life harmoniously. Given that proviso, it is generally held to be ‘benefic’ by any authority, most of whom go so far as to promise high government or managerial office on account of it. Mars seems to be the one planet not to welcome in conjunction with Dhur, the critical ‘I know better than everyone else’ attitude being hardest to overcome then. But if it is overcome, then this star as a source of strength in situations demanding hard work can well be at its very best. Like all else in the heavens, it only shows what we have to use wisely and beneficially; it does not force us in how we actually use those tools. [10]

In the ancient Chinese astronomical system, the Taiwei Enclosure, as the southern palace of the Heavenly Emperor, served as the court for handling government affairs, and its constellation layout precisely corresponded to the human official system.

The Taiwei Enclosure, divided into eastern and western sections, consists of five stars in each section, symbolizing civil and military officials.

On the West side is the Taiwei Right Enclosure. Its five stars together constitute the “Military Affairs Office” and administrative center of the Heavenly Court.

Zosma is the most northern star of the Taiwei Right Enclosure, the Prime Minister of the West, the  Distinguished Prime Minister, or the Upper Right Prime Minister, symbolizing the Heavenly Court’s “Prime Minister.”

Zosma is also the most prestigious among the Western guardians. Its functional position is equivalent to the prime minister in the human world, the head of all officials under the Emperor. He oversaw the overall situation in the central government and was in charge of court audiences and meetings.

Astrologically, Zosma indicates a clear and efficient government and a capable prime minister. If Zosma is dim or dark, it indicates that treacherous officials are in power or that the prime minister is immoral.

If Zosma is bright, it indicates a well-governed nation, where laws are enforced.

Zosma is one of the five stars in the Taiwei Right Enclosure, an asterism in the Taiwei Enclosure.

The Taiwei Enclosure represents the Supreme Palace, the seat of power and governance, impartially administering the law, supervising promotions, bestowing virtues, receiving talismans from the constellations, and granting authority to all gods, thus easing doubts and resolving disputes.
      The Taiwei Right Wall Enclosure represents the Western Wall of the Supreme Palace and symbolizes the state’s military and political power. 

When Mars enters the Taiwei Right Enclosure, ministers kill each other; the land is in turmoil; the palace must defend itself; wicked ministers will be executed; the ruler will personally lead troops or be promoted to a high-ranking official, prime minister, or censor.
      When Mercury enters the Taiwei Right Enclosure, and the ruler is in charge, it signifies chaos, disaster in the harem, or a great flood.

A bright star in the Taiwei Right Enclosure indicates a well-governed nation, where laws are enforced.

LEO.   The Lion.
      Legend.   This constellation represents the Nemean Lion, originally from the Moon, that was slain by Hercules.
      Influence.   Ptolemy makes the following observations: “Of the stars in Leo, two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars. The three in the neck are like Saturn, and in some degree like Mercury. . . . Those in the loins . . . Saturn and Venus: those in the thighs resemble Venus, and, in some degree, Mercury.” It is said that the stars in the neck, back and wing all bring trouble, disgrace and sickness affecting the part of the body ruled by the sign, especially if they happen to be in conjunction with the Moon.
