Fixed star Polis, Mu Sagittarii, is a 4th-magnitude multiple star system in the upper part of the Bow of the Archer, Sagittarius Constellation.

The system contains five components with a combined magnitude of 3.85 (variable). The brightest component (μ Sgr A) is a spectroscopic binary and chemically peculiar star. ^[1]

μ Sgr is officially named Polis; the term in Coptic means “a foal.” It was originally used for stars in the bow of the Archer, but was moved over time. ^[2]
Brown says that the stars in the bow were the Persian Gau and the Sogdian and Khorasmian Yaugh, but by these nations were imagined as a Bull; the Copts knew them as Polis, a Foal. ^[3]
μ Sgr belongs to the Chinese asterism Dǒu, “Dipper,” representing the Southern Dipper. It has the traditional names Dǒusùsān, “3rd star of Dipper,” Dǒusùkuídìsānxīng, “3rd chief star of Dipper,” Nándǒusān, “3rd southern dipper,” Tiānjī, “Heavenly Secrets,” and Shànsù, “Good lodge.” ^[4]

In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Polis is the fourth star of Dǒu, “Dipper (southern)”, the 8th Lunar Mansion. It is known as Dou Su San, “Dipper 3, Tianji and Heavenly Secrets. It is one of the Fourteen Main Stars used in Chinese astrology (Purple Star Astrology).
In ancient Chinese mythology, Polis is the star of perfect virtue and beauty, the auspicious star of wisdom, enlightenment and longevity; those under this star are exceptionally intelligent and talented.
Polis is a supportive type among the four major categories of stars (pioneering, leadership, support, and cooperation); however, its gentle personality can easily be mistaken for a cooperative type. So Polis represents a cooperative personality type within the supportive category.
