Fixed Star Nunki

Sagittarius Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Nunki on January 3

Fixed star Nunki, Sigma Sagittarii (σ Sgr), is a 2nd-magnitude close binary star system on the vane of the arrow of the Archer, Sagittarius Constellation.
Magnitude 2.05, spectral type B2.5 V, color blue-white. [1] A 2025 study confirmed that Nunki is a binary star composed of two nearly identical stars. The separation of the components is too small to resolve them with a telescope. [2]

σ Sgr is officially named Nunki
ᵐᵘˡNUN.KI or ᵐᵘˡNUNᴷᴵ = the star or constellation of Eridu where Eridu is one of the first big cities known. Archealogical proofs date back to the 3rd millennium (Sumer). It is located at the southern coast of Mesopotamia. The identification of the star or asterism is highly uncertain: it is often identified with Canopus and adjacent areas or “somewhere in Argo”. ᵐᵘˡNUN.KI is listed in MUL.APIN and there, it seems to refer to the area of Aquarius with unknown identification (Canopus not excluded) but the identification with other Babylonian texts seems to propose only in the northern part of modern Argo, i.e. Vela. The Euphratean name “Nunki” was mentioned and associated with Sigma Sgr by Robert Brown, Jr. (1892), and its use spread throughout the 20th century after its appearance in Allen’s Star Names. The modern Nunki is, thus, not identical with the Sumerian one; it is one of the many misapplications. [3]
The traditional name Nunki is from the Euphratean Tablet of the Thirty Stars, meaning the “Star of the Proclamation of the Sea,” this Sea being the quarter occupied by Aquarius, Capricornus, Delphinus, Pisces, and Piscis Australis. It is the same space in the sky that the Greek astronomer Aratus, circa 270 B.C., designated as the Water; perhaps another proof of the Euphratean origin of much of Greek astronomy. [4]
σ Sgr was al Mouakket’s Thanih al Sadirah, Secunda τού al Sadirah, “second returning ostrich.” [5]
σ Sgr belongs to the Chinese asterism Dǒu, “Dipper,” representing the Southern Dipper. It has the traditional names Dǒusùsì, “4th star of Dipper” and Tiāntóng. [6]
Some astrology texts use the name Pelagus, Latin for “sea.”

Nunki Astrology

Fixed Star Nunki has a spectral type of B2.5, indicating the planetary nature of Jupiter.

PELAGUS.   σ Sagittarii.
Notes.   A small star situated on the vane of the arrow at the Archer’s hand.
Influence.  According to Ptolemy, it is of the nature of Jupiter and Mercury; and, to Alvidas, of Saturn and Mercury. It gives truthfulness, optimism and a religious mind. [7]

NUNKI.   σ Sagittarii.
A small blue-white star. Spectral class B3. The star has also been called Pelagus.
BASIC INFLUENCES:   This star imparts to its native a strength of character, a determination to succeed, optimism, religiously beneficial, straightforwardness, and outspoken nature. Negatively, disaster and illness. [8]

Nunki was called the Star of the Proclamation of the Sea in the Euphratean Tablet of the Thirty Stars. Of the nature of Jupiter, this star has always portended favorable events for mariners and shipping. [9]

Pelagus, alias Nunki, is σ Sagittarii, at the rear end of the arrow in the Archer’s bow. Ptolemy classes it as a Jupiter-Mercury star and, with a Vis.Mag. of 2.14, it is one of the brightest in this generally rather faint Constellation. The Latin name, given first here, means the Open Sea, while Nunki is a word of Chaldean roots, all that is left to us from a longer expression: “The Edict of the Sea.”
The immense and inexorable power of the sea has always impressed humanity with a sense of the Divine Power which alone can rule such a force, and the idea of the Divinity commanding is well suggested by both the ‘Edict’ title and the ‘God is speaking’ theme in Ptolemy’s planetary simile for this star. Pelagus, Nunki, is an indicator on the chart of one who may be expected to be quite the authoritative orator on any matters concerned with the topics of Sagittarius and (Capricorn): Religion, Business, State or Foreign Affairs. Interest in long-distance travel and the ships and airplanes that make it possible is also likely, and it is interesting that the famous but very reclusive entrepreneur Howard Hughes has Phaethon on this star, a situation akin to having the visible Sun there but without the wish for publicity, even a desire to avoid it. [10]

Fixed star Nunki rules below the left knee. [11]

Tian Tong Star

In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Nunki is the fourth star of Dǒu, “Dipper (southern)”, the 8th Lunar Mansion. It is known as Do Su Si (Dipper Four), Lucky Star, and Heavenly Harmony Star, but is most commonly referred to as Tian Tong. In folk mythology, Nunki represent King Wen of Zhou, Ji Chang (c. 1152 BC – 1056 BC), the founder of the Zhou Dynasty.
Nunki is one of the Fourteen Main Stars used in Chinese astrology (Purple Star Astrology). It belongs to the Yang Water element and the cooperative type among the four major categories of major stars (pioneering, leadership, support, and cooperation). Of the Fourteen Main Stars, Nunki has the most peaceful personality, and was anciently known as the “Lucky Star.”
Nunki symbolizes longevity, fortune, and protection. It is considered a star of children; therefore, when harshly aspected or conjunct a malefic, it indicates susceptibility to deception; even if well-aspected or conjunct a benefic, success comes after initial hardship. For this star to bring good fortune, one needs a large head.
People with this star in their natal charts are gentle, eloquent, willing to compromise, kind, intelligent, refined, fond of literature, and idealistic, often imaginative but impractical. With proper training and refinement, they can achieve great things.

Strengths: Approachable, content with what one has, magnanimous, forgiving, generous, lucky with benefactors, values the pleasures of life, and does not vie for power or profit.

Disadvantages: Hesitant and timid, prone to emotional decisions, careless, overly broad-minded, lacking patience and drive, and prone to thinking more than doing.

Nunki and Merak in your chart: Contentment brings happiness, and a peaceful approach to life.

Nunki and Kaus Borealis in your chart: Dutiful and hardworking.

Personality Traits.
Nunki is an approachable star with the ability to prolong life and resolve difficulties. However, it lacks drive and makes people lazier. In essence, it tends to be passive and conservative, seeking comfort in life and work. It values harmony in interpersonal interactions and is not prone to disputes. It has a gentle smile and a forgiving attitude, which make people perceive it as gentle and easygoing, thereby fostering positive interpersonal relationships.

Nunki star was anciently known as the “Lucky Star,” but this designation does not necessarily imply good fortune or the ability to enjoy it.
This is because Nunki makes you approachable, content with what you have, magnanimous, and unafraid to forgive, thereby fostering positive interpersonal relationships and often receiving help from benefactors. You live a relaxed and comfortable life, and it seems that you don’t need to strive for anything, nor do you want to. Therefore, you are blessed.
Being blessed actually means not being calculating. The phrases that cooperative types often use, such as “suffering a loss is a gain” and “strive for long-term benefits, not for short-term gains,” perfectly express Nunki’s contentment.
Those with Nunki and a pioneering type are particularly vulnerable. These two types are inherently incompatible; the pioneering type’s strong demands stand in sharp contrast to Nunki’s tendency to yield in all things. If they don’t work together to adjust their personalities, it often leads to tragedy.
Fortunately, with the Nunki personality type, you believe that “softness can overcome hardness” and will often take the initiative to yield. However, your emotions are turbulent, and you find it difficult to calm down, which is not apparent to outsiders.
Nunki gives you exceptionally strong luck with benefactors, stemming from your excellent interpersonal relationships. You are very empathetic, attentive to your friends’ needs and feelings, and considerate. You are even more enthusiastic about serving others than about working for yourself, which naturally makes you easily appreciated and promoted.
Nunki evokes a romantic, sentimental mood, characterized by rich emotions. You are easily moved to tears by small things and are a true humanitarian.
Because of your peaceful nature, you avoid conflict and prefer to act as a peacemaker, often seen as a symbol of turning hostility into friendship. The saying “with him around, there is good fortune” seems quite reasonable. However, whether you ultimately benefit others or yourself depends on the specific circumstances at the time.
The Nunki personality type makes you popular in the workplace because you are approachable and magnanimous. However, you are often too cautious and hesitant, which leads to a lack of motivation and more thought than action.
Those who are easygoing, do not stand out, and like to please others are prone to losing their principles, becoming hypocritical and obsequious, or lacking their own core values and drifting with the tide. Although they are content with what they have, a lack of desire can lead to a lack of fighting spirit, which warrants particular attention.
You believe in hedonism. If you can’t relax and enjoy life, you might not be able to handle too much pressure. Consumption and entertainment are your best and simplest ways to relieve stress. This not only allows you to keep up with the times but also liberates your tense soul, giving you more energy to face the next challenge.
You like to spend money on enjoyment, not necessarily high-end enjoyment, but at least to eat well, dress well, and use good things, especially things closely related to life. You can’t use overly complicated machines, preferring all-in-one designs that allow you to use your fingers to do the work. You are also a confused consumer, often wondering why you bought something without understanding why.

Love Life.
While Nunki is known for enjoying life and being gentle and kind, it can sometimes be inconsistent, leading to relationships with significant age gaps. This can be mitigated by guidance from a partner, and your childlike nature may also evoke a maternal instinct in your partner. Gentle and kind, you tend to be interested in literature and art. Therefore, when choosing a partner, it’s essential to find someone with similar interests, a romantic nature, and a quick wit. In addition to these points, those with excellent communication and diplomatic skills are also desirable for the travel-loving Nunki.
You prefer partners who are relaxed, gentle, and refined.
You are very sentimental, usually smiling, but easily moved, like seeing the world in a grain of sand, suddenly getting lost in your own fantasies, and love to daydream.
You value the compatibility of spiritual communication, enjoy the feeling of being cared for by the other person, and will unconsciously invest yourself once the feeling is right, which can easily lead to unrequited love, while the other person has no feelings for you at all.
You are soft-hearted and have many concerns, so you can be very patient even when you are with the wrong person. You can rationalize the other person’s behavior and self-hypnotize, but the key issue is a lack of initiative and a reluctance to take risks.
Being too eager to accommodate the other person can lead to a loss of your own principles, causing the other person to take it for granted and not cherish it. Being overly self-critical in a relationship often results in a tragic ending.
You have strong luck with benefactors and also strong romantic luck, but you tend to passively get caught up in complicated relationships and are easily sacrificed in the end, or you become complacent with the status quo.
Nunki does not make you indifferent; you also have desires and ambitions. It’s simply that you desire harmony and dislike causing conflict, so you often compromise in relationships. But if compromise does not work, or even worse, you get bullied, you’ll be caught in a dilemma. On the one hand, you will doubt your own abilities and frequently blame yourself; on the other hand, you will really want to talk things out with the other person.
However, because you value interpersonal relationships too much, you ponder for a long time but can’t bring yourself to say it. This is the first problem you face in interpersonal relationships, and it is also a self-imposed limitation that you must overcome.
Moreover, extremes beget their opposites. If you keep things bottled up inside, your pent-up frustrations will eventually erupt like a thunderclap. That’s why we often see people who seem like perfect gentlemen or wives suddenly become incredibly fierce when they can’t hold back their tempers. These are emotions that have accumulated over time and require release.
The greatest weakness of Nunki lies in the stage of falling in love, where you exhibit little initiative. You watch others pair up while feeling helpless. Even when you muster the courage to take action, you are like an easily frightened little rabbit. At the slightest disturbance, you either immediately retreat to your safe haven or mistakenly believe you are inadequate, portraying yourself as a tragic protagonist. You are wounded all over in the battle of love, yet you do not know where the problem lies.
However, fate is fair. In the stage of maintaining love, because your action is weak, your stability is the highest. Once love comes, your tolerance and empathy are at their strongest.
Even if unhappy or unreasonable things happen in the marriage, you are more tolerant and willing to compromise. As long as your partner pays more attention to their inner world and doesn’t let you suffer too much mental stress, the marriage is likely to last.
People with the Nunki personality type have strong empathy and easily confide in the opposite sex. They don’t necessarily share their own problems, but they can also help others solve theirs. However, this communication can sometimes lead to complicated love triangles.
Although most of these are emotional affairs and don’t necessarily involve physical relationships, the inability to choose, refuse, or make a clean break often leads to chaos in love and marriage. This is what is known as a “peach blossom calamity,” which is difficult to avoid.
However, if you cannot grasp the true meaning of competition and cooperation within the “personality food chain,” you will find it difficult to be happy even if you are single. The disappointment of never having truly tried to pursue love will always haunt you in your dreams. And the astonished looks from others will often sting your heart.
Therefore, if you want to go against your own personality and break free from the painful trap of fate, you must “take action rather than just talk about it.”
If you envy others’ dramatic lives and passionate love stories, you must first accept others’ different perspectives and begin by building your own self-confidence. Without setbacks, there is no growth!

Men with Nunki in their charts tend to exhibit weak resilience in their careers, and when under pressure, this often manifests in their marriages. If his partner doesn’t know how to help him vent and instead adds insult to injury by pushing him to work harder or even mocking him for complaining without taking action, it will only create more pressure for him. This will leave him feeling sorry for himself, unable to release his emotions, and eventually trigger a host of problems, all without his partner’s awareness.

For women, it has been said since ancient times that women with Nunki in their natal charts are most suitable to be concubines or mistresses. Once they enter an unhealthy relationship, they may reflect on it and find it difficult to break free. Therefore, it is better to keep your eyes wide open and see things clearly beforehand. [12]

Another Interpretation.
Nunki presents an approachable, contented nature, which is often mistaken for being born to enjoy a life of happiness. You pursue harmony but are prone to interpersonal conflicts due to latent desires. You are good at understanding others and often receive support from benefactors. In the workplace, you are prone to losing your principles due to excessive pandering. Nunki reflects the personality traits of passively conforming to fate.
Good fortune represents not caring about anything; the most common saying of the cooperative type is “suffering a loss is gaining an advantage” and “strive for a thousand years, not for a moment”, which shows the contentment of Nunki. [13]

Yi Suan Xing Jun.
Yi Suan Xing Jun is a character in the novel Journey to the West (1592). He corresponds to the fourth star of the Southern Dipper (Nunki), symbolically the Star Lord of Increased Calculation. His title was “True Lord of Benefiting Calculation and Preserving Life” or “Star Lord of Heavenly Harmony and Benefiting Calculation” 益算 (Yi Suan) means to increase lifespan. [14]

Constellation Sagittarius

SAGITTARIUS.   The Archer.
Legend.   This constellation represents the wise and just Centaur Chiron, who was killed by accidentally dropping one of the poisoned arrows of Hercules upon his foot.
Influence.   The following are Ptolemy’s remarks: “The stars at the point of the arrow in Sagittarius have influence similar to that of Mars and the Moon: those on the bow, and at the grasp of the hand, act like Jupiter and Mars . . . those in the waist and in the back resemble Jupiter, and also Mercury moderately: those in the feet, Jupiter and Saturn.” … By the Kabalists Sagittarius is associated with the Hebrew letter Vau and the 6th Tarot Trump “The Lovers.” [7]

Now called Sagittarius (Sgr), this constellation is the Domicile of Dianna and in classical times was also known as Diannae Sidus. It is a fortunate and fruitful constellation indicating events pertaining to kings or a large portion of mankind. [9]
