Fixed star Mizar, Zeta Ursae Majoris, is a quadruple star system in the Tail of the Big Bear, Ursa Major constellation. Mizar is a visual double, each of which is a spectroscopic binary. The two visible stars are referred to as ζ1 and ζ2 Ursae Majoris, or Mizar A and B. Their combined apparent magnitude is 2.04.
- ζ1 UMa magnitude (V) 2.23, spectral type A2Vp/A2Vp
- ζ2 UMa magnitude (V) 3.88, spectral type kA1h(eA)mA7IV-V
Mizar also forms a naked eye double with the fainter star 80 Ursae Major, Alcor (15°52′ Virgo). This brilliant white and pale emerald star also appears in the handle of the Big Dipper asterism.
The traditional name Mizar derives from the Arabic المئزر miʼzar meaning ‘apron; a wrapper, covering, cover,’ waistband or girdle.

Mizar Mythology
Chinese Taoism personifies Mizar as the star of Lu (禄). The Lu star is believed to be Zhang Xian, who lived during the Later Shu dynasty. The word lu specifically refers to the salary of a government official. As such, the Lu star is the star of prosperity, rank, and influence. The Lu star was also worshipped as the deity dictating one’s success in the imperial examinations and, therefore, success in the imperial bureaucracy. The Lu star is usually depicted in the dress of a mandarin.
The Star of Prosperity is Mizar in Ursa Major. The Star of Prosperity (Luxing), dressed in imperial robes, is a smiling, bearded man who holds the Wish-Fulfilling Scepter (ruyi). [1]
In Hindu astronomy, Mizar is called Vasistha and Alcor is called Arundhati. As a married couple, they symbolize marriage. In some Hindu communities, priests conducting a wedding ceremony point to these stars as a symbol of the closeness marriage brings to a couple. [7]
The 13th-century Persian astronomical writer Al Kazwini said that “people tested their eyesight by this star.” Arabic literature says that only those with the sharpest eyesight can see its companion Alcor. The name the Arabs used for Alcor was suha, meaning either the ‘forgotten’ or ‘neglected’ one. Mizar is easily seen today, and it is believed it has grown in magnitude over the centuries. [2]
Mizar Astrology
The spectral class A2 suggests Mizar has a Venus nature.
ζ Ursae Majoris. A white and pale emerald star on the tail of the Bear. This star was originally called ‘Mirak’ (not Merak). Later, an astronomer changed its name to Mizar. Its companion star, ALCOR, is 11’ 48” distant from Mizar, which in miles is in the millions. Alcor is yellow, of an unfortunate influence. Spectral classes A2 and A6. A complex star system. Alcor spectral class F. This star system imparts to its natives ambition, creativeness, artistic inclinations, and disharmony. The system deals with the masses, catastrophes, controversial issues, controversial subjects and people. Tragedies. [8]
Supposedly, Mizar portends a Mars nature. The reputation of Mizar, if it is in maximal position in a mundane map, is that of being connected with fires of a catastrophic extent and mass calamities. In personal charts, Mizar is not helpful if conjunction bad planets. It is not wrong to assume that, besides these handicaps, artistic emanations can also be attributed to Mizar. Mozart and Marlene Dietrich had this star rising. [3]
Mizar is said to presage the death of a loved one by the ancient astrologers. [4]
Mizar means a girdle or waistband. There is no traceable reason for this name appearing here, and it is almost certainly an early Western misspelling of Mirza, Prince, for the next star along signifies a man of authority. In both cases, of course, the titles come from a culture that saw other than a bear in these stars or did not allow the Bear this long tail.
We have to keep to the wrong name, which is now too well established., but we should allow that Mizar/Mirza does show more than average authority in the Virgoan role of service to one’s fellow man, sharing in that tendency to power, which shows in all stars in the mid-point of a Sign. The same Saturn-Venus nature found with its zodiacal neighbors Zosma and Denebola. [5]
Ursa Major Constellation
According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. It is said to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature but an uneasy spirit and great anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists, it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump “The Chariot.” [6]
Astrologically, both Bears were said to presage an evil influence. They are particularly injurious as regards the affairs of nations and kings. [4]
