Kaus Borealis at 06°19′ Capricorn has an orb of 2°00′
The Sun joins Kaus Borealis on December 28
Fixed star Kaus Borealis, Lambda Sagittarii, is a 3rd-magnitude single star that marks the top of the Archer’s bow in Sagittarius Constellation.
Magnitude 2.81, spectral type K1IIIb, color orange. [1]
λ Sgr is officially named Kaus Borealis.
Arbitrarily applied in recent times, together with the Latin distinctions of “middle” (for δ), “southern”(for ε), and “northern” (for λ), from the indigenous Arabic (and later modern Arabic) constellation name al-qaus, “the Bow.”
For the indigenous Arabs, al-qaus was marked by the curved line of stars ξ², ο, π, d, ρ, and υ Sgr (corresponding to what in other cultures was Sagittarius among the zodiacal signs). The modern Arabs used the indigenous name for the Greeks’ Archer, alternatively translated as al rāmī. [2]
λ Sge was Rai al Naaim, Pastor Struthionum, “keeper of the ostriches.” [3]
λ, 3.1, yellow. Kaus Borealis, the Northern (part of the) Bow, was Al Tizini’s Rāʽi al Naʽāïm, “the Keeper of the Naʽams.” In ancient Arabia the two small groups of stars now marking the head and the vane of the Archer’s arrow were of much note as relics of still earlier asterisms, as well as a lunar station. The westernmost of these, — γ, δ, ε, and η — were Al Naʽām al Wārid, “the Going Ostriches;” and the easternmost, — σ, ζ, φ, χ, and τ, — Al Naʽām al Ṣādirah, “the Returning Ostriches,” passing to and from the celestial river, the Milky Way, with the star λ for their Keeper.]
With the same stars it may have been the Akkadian Anu-ni‑tum, said to have been associated with the great goddess Istar. [4]
λ Sgr belongs to the Chinese asterism Dǒu, “Dipper,” shaped like the Big Dipper, also refers temple in the sky or the snake-shaped basalt. It has the traditional names Dǒusùèr, “2nd star of Dipper,” Dǒusùkuídìèrxīng, “2nd chief star of Dipper,” Nándǒuèr, “2nd southern dipper,” and Tiānliáng. [5]

Kaus Borealis Astrology
Fixed Star Kaus Borealis has a spectral type of K1, indicating the planetary nature of Mars.
KAUS BOREALIS. λ Sagittarii.
A giant orange star in the northern part of the bow of the Archer. Spectral class Kl.
BASIC INFLUENCES: This star gives its natives idealism, a sense of justice, humane ideas, high enterprise, success, notoriety, disgraceful actions, boldness, forced changes. [6]
The Bow of the Archer.
The Bow of the Archer has a Jupiter-Mars nature and is specially credited with promoting mental stimuli, enterprise and a sense of justice. Natives who are influenced by this star are promoters of idealistic and humane ideas if this fixed star is conjunct Ascendant, Midheaven, Sun, Moon or Jupiter.
The Bow of the Archer was conjunct Sun in the birth chart of the actress Hildegard Knef and the Chinese dictator Mao Tse Tung; conjunct Venus is the chart of the French Painter Toulouse Lautrec and of the former president of the Reichsbank, H. Schacht; conjunct Jupiter in the chart of the great composer Beethoven and of the cosmobiologist Reinhold Ebertin.
The disadvantageous outcome of the Saturn conjunction can be seen in the birth chart of King Baudoin, who remained childless and who had a tendency to depressive moods. [7]
Kaus Borealis, λ Sagittarii, is a hybrid of Arabic and Latin, coming from Al Qaus Al Shamali, the Northern (star in the) Bow. At some earlier time, this and several others stars near it were associated with keeping Ostriches, of which there seemed to be a herd in this part of the sky (perhaps on the ground too), and the names Al Rais Al Na‘ams or Al Thalimain still turn up in some literature. But the Archer and his bow are now firmly established, so we stick with Kaus Borealis for our purposes here. Ptolemy does not appear to have included this star, having so many to chose from in this Constellation, but if he had then he could well have classed it as a Mercury-Mars type. It does conveys a sense of strength and flexibility combined and this often shows up in the horoscopes of people who can put great force behind their reasoning, yet be somewhat more flexible than those described under Polis. [8]

The Tianliang Star
In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Kaus Borealis is the second star of Dǒu, “Dipper (southern)”, the 8th Lunar Mansion. Its astronomical name is Do Su Er (Dipper Four) and is also known as the Tianliang Star, the Longevity Star, the Heavenly Beam, and the Old Man Star. Anicently it was called the Yin Star (Yinxing), and it is symbolized as the Star Lord of Prosperity, or the God of Prosperity. Most commonly, it is referred to as Tianliang.
Personality.
Kaus Borealis is one of the Fourteen Main Stars used in Chinese astrology (Purple Star Astrology). It is classified as the cooperative type among the four major categories of Main Stars (pioneering, leadership, support, and cooperation). Its personality combines compassion and stability with excessive enthusiasm. It often shows chivalry but is prone to acting on emotions.
Kaus Borealis is a compassionate star that governs longevity and nobility. It is the master of the 4th House and turns misfortune into good fortune. In transits, directions and return charts, Kaus Borealis helps you get through safely. In particular, when disaster strikes, it can enhance vitality.
Kaus Borealis is a star that does not like money. It can bring blessings to ancestors and also bless descendants. It is full of love, has a good relationship with elders, and cares for subordinates and juniors.
Kaus Borealis in the natal chart confers compassion, joy in doing good, a value for public service, and a tendency to give without expecting anything in return.
However, because of a conservative, steady mindset, you may be described as “mature beyond his years,” “mature and prudent,” and “old-fashioned,” hence the name “Old Man Star.”
Many people with Kaus Borealis look like old men even in their youth, appearing prematurely aged, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they will live long. Therefore, the ancient saying that Kaus Borealis signifies longevity and that encountering someone with Kaus Borealis will extend one’s lifespan is unfounded.
Kaus Borealis, also known as “Knight Star,” is associated with a love of helping others.
Because you have a strong sense of public service, you will want to lend a helping hand when you see the weak or injustice. Therefore, you are a good pillar of society and are very well suited to studying sociology and volunteering in social service, the Red Cross, etc.
Serving people will bring you a lot of happiness. However, this enthusiasm for service also brings worries and anxieties. Kaus Borealis can give a workaholic nature and an inability to stay idle. But excessive enthusiasm and deep involvement can lead to resentment.
While you are enthusiastic about providing services, you often suffer losses and are cheated. Because you value your reputation, you pretend to be rich even when you are not. Therefore, you will make a show of yourself in public, but then feel the pain of regret when you get home, and you have a heavy mental burden.
Fortunately, because you are quite content, as long as you change your mindset and comfort yourself with “striving for a thousand years, not for a moment” and “suffering a loss is a gain,” you can always be calm and content with the ordinary. [10]
Kaus Borealis provides protection and can resolve and transform misfortunes. It makes you caring, upright, self-disciplined, steady, straightforward, cheerful, intelligent and selfless. You avoid extremes, like to take care of others, always consider others, and are not easily led astray.
You tend to think positively, are far-sighted, and care about the world’s troubles. You lack flexibility but have foresight and the characteristics of prolonging life and overcoming difficulties, with good fortune emerging after initial hardship.
You excel at theoretical discussions but lack the drive and perseverance to put ideas into practice. Fond of debate, you have a talent for eloquence. However, in harsh situations, this eloquence often unintentionally offends others. You love to argue; regardless of whether you are right or wrong, you will argue until the other party admits defeat.
Kaus Borealis is an auspicious star for elders. You are deeply loved by them, have a good rapport with older people, bridging any generation gap.
Rulerships.
Teachers, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, nurses, parents, eldest child, tall plants, churches, temples, botanical gardens, brain nerves, overwork, gray hair.
Strengths.
Multifaceted interests, enjoys intellectual pursuits, has a penchant for religious and metaphysical matters, is composed and trustworthy, well-mannered, approachable, enjoys helping and caring for others, prioritizes reason over emotion, has a far-sighted vision, is thorough in consideration, possesses strong analytical skills, is bold yet meticulous, and acts with integrity.
Weaknesses.
Aloof and unsociable, not particularly clean, dresses casually, lacks eloquence, prone to arguing, debating, and nagging, arrogant and conceited, craves power, borders on authoritarianism, strong-willed, stubborn, and stingy.
Men.
Steady, upright, selfless, gentle, humble, serious and unsmiling in appearance, strong analytical skills, methodical in action, easygoing, kind-hearted, compassionate, like an older brother, often unkempt, sloppy, and procrastinates. While they are diligent in their work, they tend to be talkative and prone to nagging.
Women.
Intelligent, capable, composed, quick-witted, forthright and generous like a man, easygoing, helpful, like an older sister, the so-called “big sister.”
Kaus Borealis and Phecda in the same chart: capable and principled, with a warm heart to help others.
Kaus Borealis and Nunki in the same chart: Diligent and conscientious in fulfilling their duties and bearing hardships without complaint. [10]
Career.
Because you are conservative, steady, and not impulsive, you are good at maintaining the status quo but not good at innovation. Professional skills are required for career development. Therefore, if you want to start a business, you must have skills. As long as you have the ability, you will naturally attract people who support you and provide financial and labor support.
Kaus Borealis is suitable for work in the education (teacher), logistics support, promotions, medical care (doctor), social services, law, entertainment and accounting industries.
Because you have a spirit of sacrifice and dedication, your drive to serve the public is higher than your drive for status and money. After middle age, you will probably engage in social welfare activities, become involved in religion, and volunteer, reflecting a tendency to give without expecting anything in return. [10]
Kaus Borealis is the star of health and well-being. You can excel as a doctor, pharmacist, nurse or traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. You may develop an interest in researching herbal medicine, collecting folk remedies and secret formulas.
You possess strong natural abilities in social interaction and public relations, making you well-suited for careers in entertainment, agency work, intelligence work, and intelligence gathering.
Kaus Borealis gives leadership qualities and makes you refined and noble, but not fond of money. You tend to be laid-back and prone to procrastination, making you well-suited to academic research.
Other suitable careers include the civil service, teaching, temple keeping, insurance and civil engineering.
You have the willpower to stay in a position or job for a long time until the goal is achieved or there are no more new opportunities.
You tend to enjoy studying medicine and metaphysics, but must be careful not to miss out on marriage or romantic opportunities due to improper handling of these issues. [11]
Financial Management.
You may not be particularly interested in money, but that doesn’t mean you don’t like investing. What you should invest in is hard to say, because you have so many interests—too many to be greedy. This interest can be in people or things, but whatever it is, you need to maintain a balance.
Consumer Views.
You are a talkative consumer. You will keep asking questions, such as whether the product will break easily. You don’t necessarily buy brand names; you prefer cheap and practical products. You will buy wherever it is a good bargain. You trust the opinions of experts and have more confidence in established brands with good reputations.
Relationships.
You are well-liked for your helpfulness, but you can be a bit long-winded. The reason is not that you talk too much, but that you are eager to do well and afraid that others will make mistakes, so you patiently and earnestly advise others. The key is whether your partner can listen or interact well with you.
Furthermore, you are highly sociable, extremely patient, value fairness and justice, like to be a peacemaker, and have the compassion and responsibility of an elder brother or sister, making you a worthwhile friend.
Kaus Borealis has a simple, helpful nature, so you are easily attracted to the vulnerable. Seeing their pitiful state, you can’t help but feel empathy and compassion, offering them emotional support and comfort, or analyzing situations for them. This not only earns you respect but may also lead to a happy marriage.
Basically, you are easily captivated by simple, honest people of the opposite sex, but that doesn’t mean you lack ambition; it simply means you prefer a more leisurely life. Furthermore, you also have a habit of playfully bickering with your partners. [10]
Love traits.
Because the cooperative type is at the bottom of the “personality food chain” compared to other types, it is relatively weak in the process of love and marriage, especially when encountering a masculine type (pioneering and leadership). You are more like a frightened little rabbit, always hiding in the woods, afraid to stick its head out.
You have a strong sense of public service and want to lend a helping hand when you see the weak or injustice. Therefore, you enjoy taking care of your partner, but this causes you significant worry and mental strain. Fortunately, in the end, you always manage to find peace and contentment in their ordinariness.
However, an excess of strengths can become a weakness. You can become too helpful, especially fond of comforting and caring for others, and are prone to falling in love when confiding in other members of the opposite sex. If you already have a partner, this can be a serious problem.
If you don’t know how to refuse someone, it’s okay if it’s someone in a supportive or cooperative relationship. But the other person might silently back down, leaving both of you heartbroken and regretful that you didn’t meet before you were married.
However, if the other party is a pioneering or leadership type, they may feel that you are deliberately deceiving them and being irresponsible, forcing you to make a statement and leaving you with only one option.
You possess a deep religious sentiment and a profound compassion for humanity. In fact, you often exhibit these traits because your patience, self-control, pursuit of peace, and benevolence are fundamental tenets of religion.
From a religious or philosophical perspective, love is the root of suffering. “From love arises sorrow, from love arises fear; if one is free from love, there is neither sorrow nor fear.” This is because love creates attachment and causes distress.
Kaus Borealis makes you care too much about others. In the realm of love, you easily find yourself at the lower rungs of the food chain, becoming tragic and viewing love through a pessimistic lens.
The result of this tendency being further amplified is the abandonment of love, the detachment from worldly desires, or the transformation of personal love into universal love, giving without receiving, in order to avoid the pain that love brings.
Kaus Borealis is more suitable for women than men because of the traditional concept of yang men and yin women. Women are expected to be gentle and graceful, while men are expected to be masculine and proactive. Therefore, men with Kaus Borealis tend to have more difficult romantic lives. After all, societal values still expect men to be strong and proactive, and are less accepting of overly weak men.
Kaus Borealis has low confidence, making it more difficult for you to overcome low points than other major stars. You also require more assistance from others, which explains why you often seek help from fortune tellers. This is your cooperative nature, and there’s no reason for you to hesitate or feel embarrassed. Finding inner peace through fortune telling is of paramount importance. You prefer mature, stable, honest and reliable partners, and highly value the other person’s compassion and sense of public service.
You value the compatibility of spiritual communication, have a soft heart, are compassionate, and are typically a pacifist.
You have religious sentiments and believe that love is about sacrifice, not possession. Therefore, when things are not going well, or you feel helpless, you tend to avoid love but explain it to yourself as “transforming small love into great love.”
You generally have good interpersonal relationships, a chivalrous heart, and enjoy taking care of others. You are happy to help those who are weak, lost, and helpless. However, you often get caught up in complicated relationships without realizing it, and because you are afraid of hurting others, you don’t know how to extricate yourself, resulting in a lot of trouble in your love life. [10]
The Old Man Star.
When many people hear the name “Kaus Borealis” or see this star in their birth chart, their first reaction is often: “Teacher, the book says this is the ‘old man’s star. Does that mean I have an old mindset? Or will I age prematurely?” Others hear that it can “turn bad luck into good luck” and think it’s an invincible lucky charm, meaning they’ll win at life from now on.
Actually, these understandings are only half right. The wisdom of Kaus Borealis is far more profound than its superficial labels suggest. It is not only about longevity and blessings, but also a “divine star” that guides career direction and reveals the path of life cultivation. The so-called “elderly stars” are actually guardians of good fortune.
Kaus Borealis does not mean you look older than your age or that your physical functions are declining rapidly. Kaus Borealis belongs to the Earth element, which is heavy and represents a mature, stable, and principled quality.
We compare it to an “elder” because it possesses the wisdom and compassion that only elders have. Imagine the most respected elder in your family: he may not talk much usually, but he can make decisions when it matters; he may be a little nagging, but that’s because he’s afraid you’ll go astray; he values traditional morality, emphasizes the order of seniority, is kind-hearted, and always thinks about protecting his descendants.
The most core value of this star lies in the word “shade.” Shade is the cool shade under a big tree, the blessings left by ancestors, and the protective umbrella given to you by heaven. Therefore, Kaus Borealis is also known as the “shade star.” People with Kaus Borealis in their natal chart usually have good relationships with elders and are likely to receive guidance and support from superiors, teachers, and other older people. This is not just luck; it is also because the steadiness and maturity you exude make elders feel you are “teachable.”
Therefore, don’t resist the title of “elderly star.” In today’s fast-paced society, the composure and foresight of elders are precisely the most scarce resources. [12]
Constellation Sagittarius
SAGITTARIUS. The Archer.
Legend. This constellation represents the wise and just Centaur Chiron, who was killed by accidentally dropping one of the poisoned arrows of Hercules upon his foot.
Influence. The following are Ptolemy’s remarks: “The stars at the point of the arrow in Sagittarius have influence similar to that of Mars and the Moon: those on the bow, and at the grasp of the hand, act like Jupiter and Mars . . . those in the waist and in the back resemble Jupiter, and also Mercury moderately: those in the feet, Jupiter and Saturn.” … By the Kabalists Sagittarius is associated with the Hebrew letter Vau and the 6th Tarot Trump “The Lovers.”
Now called Sagittarius (Sgr), this constellation is the Domicile of Dianna and in classical times was also known as Diannae Sidus. It is a fortunate and fruitful constellation indicating events pertaining to kings or a large portion of mankind. [9]
