Alpha Ursae Majoris (α UMa) is a spectroscopic binary star system made up of the stars designated α UMa A and B, with a combined magnitude of 1.79 (suspected variable). Another spectroscopic binary pair, sometimes referred to as α UMa C, is separately catalogued as HD 95638. Together, they form a quadruple star system. [1]

Alpha Ursae Majoris, Dubhe [Wikipedia]

α UMa is officially and traditionally named Dubhe. Applied in medieval times from the Arabic constellation name al-dubb, “the Bear,” for Ursa Major. The spelling in the oldest sources was edubh (corresponding to the Arabic noun with the article al prefixed as e). Afterwards, by corruption, the initial e was transferred to the end of the word: dubhe. [2]

α, Binary, 2 and 11, yellow,
Al Bīrūnī said that it was the Hindu Kratu, the Rishi or Sage.
Lockyer asserts that it was Āk, the Eye, i.e. the prominent one of the constellation, utilized in the alignment of the walls of the temple of Hathor at Denderah, and the orientation point of that structure perhaps before 5000 B.C.; at all events, before the Thigh became circumpolar, about 4000 B.C. This was in the times of the Hor-she-shu, the worshipers of Horus, before the reign of Mena, when the star had a declination of over 64°, — now about 62°24′. And he finds two other temples also so oriented.
As typifying a goddess of Egypt, it was Bast Isis and Taurt Isis. [3]

In Chinese astronomy, α UMa is located in the asterism 北斗 Běidǒu, “Northern Dipper,” and is known by the following traditional names:
北斗一 Běidǒuyī, “1st star of Northern Dipper.”
      天樞 Tiānshū, “The Celestial Pivot.”
      紐星 Niǔxīng, “Turning star.”
      天魁 Tiānkuí, “Celestial chief.”
      贪狼 Tānláng, “Greedy wolf.”
      枢星 Shūxīng, “Pivot star.”
      天蓬 Tiānpéng, “Celestial fleabane.”
      生气 Shēngqì, “Angry.” [4]

Dubhe Astrology

Fixed star Dubhe has spectral types K0 and A5, indicating a planetary nature, similar to that of Mars and, to a lesser extent, Venus.

MARS-VENUS.   Strong passions, artistic feeling, gain through women and friends, honor and preferment in martial affairs, especially if rising or culminating. [5]

DUBHE. α Ursae Major.
The main star of the Great Bear. A binary, yellow star. “The Back of the Greater Bear.”
BASIC INFLUENCES:   Gives the native self-confidence, arrogance, bold, adventerous nature, acquisitive, patient, suspicious, mistrustful, uneasy, idealism. NOTE: Natives born with the Dubhe conjunction tend to have a degree of foresight, almost bordering on psychic ability, the more positive nativities will benefit from this while the more negative nativities will now (not?) be aware of this influence. In well aspected nativities, they have the power to overcome enemies. [6]

Dubhe, Alpha Ursa Majoris
Dubhe, in Arabic “Bear”, the main star of The Great Bear, is credited with the destructiveness of Mars, working itself out, particularly in mundane maps, in a nasty way if this fixed star is conjunction Saturn. Dubhe is positioned conjunction the Moon in the natal chart of Mao Tse Tung and with Saturn in the chart of Hitler. [7]

Just on past Acubens, we come to the first of our Ursa Major star, the α of the Constellation, Dubhe, or Dubb, the Arabic for Bear. It is on the creature’s back and, on the Dipper, it is at the lip of the pan end, pointing the way to Polaris. We get no help from Ptolemy here, but the function of Dubhe in pointing us to our chief guiding star tells us that those gifted with it, while they may not have all the expertise themselves, will certainly know where to send others for help, and will delight in doing so. A Mercury-Venus simile is not far amiss. [8]

The Greedy Wolf Star

In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Dubhe is the first star of the Běidǒu, “Northern Dipper” asterism, within the Zǐ wēi yuán, “Purple Forbidden Enclosure.” It is known as Tiānshū, “The Heavenly Pivot,” and Tānláng, “Greedy Wolf Star,” but is most commonly referred to as Tan Lang. It is one of the Fourteen Main Stars used in Chinese astrology (Purple Star Astrology).
In Taoism, the Greedy Wolf Star is the incarnation of the Star Lord of Greed, who descends to earth at certain times to enlighten people and bring hope for peace. In the I Ching, it is the star of wisdom and good fortune, symbolizing strong rule and governance.
In Chinese astrology, Dubhe symbolizes rule and management, and is associated with a pioneering nature, versatility, quick wit, resourcefulness, and both social and strategic abilities. Negatively, it fosters greed and a tendency to learn many things but master few. In relationships, it indicates an extroverted and emotional nature and a tendency to form multiple love triangles.
Of the fourteen main stars in Chinese astrology, Dubhe gives the most versatility and desire, and the most changeable personality.
Dubhe provides diverse and extensive knowledge, which is good for impromptu performances and situations requiring quick thinking, such as social interactions, creative brainstorming, and hosting parties.
This star indicates a love of interacting with people, a strong desire to perform, the ability to create a lively atmosphere in a crowd, and the capacity to foster warm interpersonal relationships. The entertainment industry is a perfect stage for you to perform.
Natural talents include public relations, business, and marketing, making you well-suited for service industries that involve frequent human contact, rapidly changing technology industries, and entertainment industries that emphasize individuality.

Personality traits:
Dubhe symbolizes resourcefulness, versatility, desire, fortune and misfortune. It gives a colorful life, a love of literature and art, eloquence, and strong self-expression. You never refuse or hesitate to help anyone in need. Your enthusiastic and lively nature often infuses vitality in those around you.
One of your most endearing qualities is your incredibly sweet tongue. You speak with such sweetness, it’s as if you’ve been drinking honey, that your words are almost too sweet to bear, and you always manage to make others feel incredibly happy. You are also very good at saying nice things.
Furthermore, you’re the kind of friend who always steps up to help. If there’s anything that can be done with your help, you’ll never refuse or hesitate. You will always be there, enthusiastic and lively, making everyone around you feel your energy!
Strengths: Versatile, quick-witted, sociable, quick learner, resourceful, ambitious, has a colorful life, and often receives help from the opposite sex.
Weaknesses: Greedy for more, dislikes in-depth study, suspicious, fickle, learns many things but does not master them, indulges in pleasure and has strong desires.

Financial Management:
You tend to have a poor concept of saving money and possess a hedonistic spirit, believing that money is something you can’t take with you when you die. Sometimes, you can’t resist putting on a show in front of friends and lovers, which leads to even more extravagant spending.
You might find success more easily through external investments. You have many opinions and perspectives on investments, and various investment methods or goals are constantly on your mind, which makes you appear highly forward-thinking. However, your focus is often limited to the first step of an investment, and your ability to follow up afterward is noticeably weaker. In situations where you cannot be comprehensive, a hit-and-run blitzkrieg approach might be more suitable.

Views on Relationships:
Fixed star Dubhe is associated with an emphasis on material life. With high consumption and desires, you prioritize economic considerations when choosing a partner, requiring someone capable of managing finances and household affairs.
Sometimes, you act solely on intuition, and a single feeling can lead to an unconscious attraction. You have a strong appreciation for beauty and pay considerable attention to appearance. However, upon closer analysis, you also consider a potential partner’s financial situation, family background, and whether they offer enough versatility to satisfy your fickle nature.

Love Relationships:
You tend to fall in love with people who are multi-talented, have a desire to perform, are witty and humorous, and are popular with the opposite sex.
You have a strong sense of insecurity about your partner, a strong sense of self-defense, and, as you love your partner more, a greater desire to control them, which leads to more frequent conflicts. Therefore, you are prone to sudden breakups in response to a single disagreement.
You enjoy making friends and are very popular, but you have a somewhat casual attitude and use inappropriate body language, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as casual or frivolous.
You dislike mundane love affairs. Romantic relationships tend to be smooth, but harmonious marriages are difficult, especially for women. This is because, under traditional values, both men and women find it hard to accept a partner’s popularity and social life. While a man with Dubhe can use business-related flings as an excuse for his womanizing, a woman with Dubhe is often seen as a “womanizer” or a “loose woman,” and is particularly disliked by her in-laws.
You have a strong sense of self, enjoy being surrounded by many people, and are prone to multiple love triangles.

Professional Relationships:
When your subordinates are pioneering types: They are the same type of person as you, and may even be more proactive than you, so you don’t need to teach them how to do things. Provide them with concise and direct instructions. Be careful not to overdo it or sound frivolous, or you will lose the respect of your subordinates.
When your subordinates are leadership-type: A leader-type person will think things through carefully before taking action. Therefore, they might make mistakes because they didn’t consult you, possibly because they are overly confident and believe they fully understand the situation.
When your subordinates are support type: Supportive people dislike doing things without direction or procedure; they’ll get to the bottom of everything. If they don’t press you for details, it’s because they’re afraid of being scolded, which might actually lead to bigger mistakes. Therefore, you must control your emotions and patiently explain your thoughts to them, while maintaining a relaxed demeanor.
When your subordinates are cooperative: Collaborative people are perfectionists and will do their best to produce excellent reports, but they might find communicating with you daunting because they value detail, while you are too rough around the edges, and your thinking styles are too different. You can apply additional pressure on them to open up to you.
When your supervisor is an innovator: You are both pioneering individuals who act quickly, so there must be a significant reason why he hasn’t made a decision. It’s also possible that he’s too busy and has neglected your affairs.
When your supervisor is a leader: A leader considers the group’s best interests when addressing issues, sometimes at the expense of personal interests. His delay in expressing his opinion on an issue may indicate that he has not yet assessed the gains and losses. [10]

Greed:
The “Tan” in Tan Lang (Dubhe) clearly denotes the characteristic of “greed,” namely, desire. Without desires, humanity would lack the driving force for progress. Therefore, greed is a significant characteristic of human nature and the biggest reason why we can enjoy the progress of civilization. This is why pioneering individuals tend to be more competitive. However, having too high a desire means that it is not easy to be satisfied, and there will always be a sense of incompleteness in one’s heart. This can easily lead to cynicism, which becomes a vicious cycle.
Only by shaping one’s destiny and finding ways to go against one’s personality can one change it into a virtuous cycle. What is a virtuous cycle? It’s not about suppressing your desires, because that’s not easy to do. It’s about striving for what you want, but not being too concerned about the outcome or the result, so as not to suffer. This is what I mean by “letting go of the desire for gain and loss.”
Buddhism holds that “greed,” “anger,” and “ignorance” are the three poisons of life, yet these desires are necessary to life’s evolution. Therefore, life is a paradox, full of contradictions.
Because of greed, you want to learn new things; but because of greed, you are also prone to trying to do too much at once and not being able to master anything, thus falling into the predicament of being a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.
You are fundamentally different from the supportive and sociable type. Because you are proactive and assertive, you are not particularly selective in your social circles. After getting to know people, you are prone to friction with friends due to your desire to control, which often leads to disagreements and a tendency to drift apart. This can give the impression that you are too pragmatic.
Furthermore, you are self-willed and don’t care much about other people’s feelings, which often leads to conflict and a predicament of having many fair-weather friends but few close friends; as a result, there are frequent disputes over wine, women, money, and anger.
You have frequent interpersonal relationships and good social skills. With more contact with others, there will naturally be more gossip and disputes, but it does not mean that you will necessarily have romantic entanglements.
When interacting with others, you are humorous, witty, considerate, and gentle. However, you can sometimes be too casual and frivolous with the opposite sex, which can easily lead to romantic entanglements. This is why Dubhe has been called the number one star associated with romantic troubles since antiquity, a phenomenon attributable to its intrinsic nature.
Those with the Dubhe personality type embody a life philosophy that combines the control of power with a free and unrestrained spirit. However, you lack patience and often change your mind when things don’t go your way in your interactions with others. This is something you must restrain yourself from. [11]

Constellation Ursa Major

URSA MAJOR. The Greater Bear.
Influence.   According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. It is said to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump “The Chariot.”
Magical.   Gives craft, ingenuity and valor. [5]

Astrologically both Bears were said to presage an evil influence. They are particularly injurious as regards to the affairs of nations and kings. [9]

  1. My Saturn is on Dubhe 1°33′ and my partner’s 0°27′ 🙁
We are both vegans for 15 years now and let ants invade our home whenever they feel like hahaha
I cannot say for either of us to be destructive….

    • I would say more research needs to be done before stating this is a destructive star. Ebertin only gives those two examples after all.

  2. The 1889 Oklahoma Land Rush Event Astrology had Dubhe conjunct Saturn. One of the most disastrous free land handouts in US history that resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of natives.

People were told they weren’t allowed to cross the river until 12 Noon into what was nomadic indian land and would become Guthrie Oklahoma population 10,000 within 6 or 7 hours.

The north Node was set completely in the center of cancer and Mars was Conjunct Venus in Torus.
