Fixed Star Denebola

Leo Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Denebola on September 14

Fixed star Denebola, Beta Leonis, is a single star in the tail of the Lion, Leo Constellation. Magnitude 2.14, spectral type A3Va, color white.

The traditional name Denebola is shortened from Deneb Alased, from the Arabic phrase ذنب الاسد ðanab al-asad ‘tail of the lion.’ In Hindu astronomy, Denebola marks the beginning of the twelfth of nakshatra: उत्तर फाल्गुनी Uttara Phalgunī ‘second reddish one.’

Denebola Astrology

The spectral type A3 indicates the planetary nature of Venus.

A blue star in the Lion’s tail. It gives swift judgment, despair, regrets, public disgrace, misfortune from the elements of nature, and happiness turned to anger, and makes its natives noble, daring, self-controlled, generous and busy with other people’s affairs. According to Ptolemy, it is of the nature of Saturn and Venus; to Wilson and Pearce, of Saturn, Venus and Mercury; to Simmonite, of Uranus; and to Alvidas, of Mercury, Uranus and Mars. [1]

β Leonis. A white star. Spectral class A4. The native makes swift judgments, has despair and is regretful, publicly disgraced, happiness turned to sorrow or anger, the native is noble, generous, busy with other people’s affairs, anxious, and has benefits that do not last. Illness. Denebola, a white star, nevertheless, may create problems for its natives, in particular with Venus, Mercury and Mars conjunctions. Unless the celestial objects are strongly aspected, there remains a potential for suicide, a despairing life, nervous breakdowns, and self-created problems for its natives. Mercury, in particular, should be strongly aspected to prevent any problems. These natives are ‘single-minded and tenacious.’ [7]

Denebola was of unlucky influence in astrology, portending misfortune and disgrace, and thus opposed to Regulus in character as in position in the figure. [8]

In classical and medieval times, a man’s misfortune and disgrace were generally attributed to a woman. This perhaps explains the bad reputation of so many Venusian stars such as Denebola. However, in this instance the indications are for a noble and generous individual and the misfortune is apt to stem from this nobility of character. [4]

Denebola in the Tail of the Lion has a Uranian nature and it is supposed that in mundane horoscopes, major catastrophes are triggered by it. Depending on position and aspect to other stellar bodies in a personal cosmogram, either preferment or fall is credited to this star. Found on the Ascendant and especially in company with Mercury, a quarrelsome nature with a liking for legal action is attributed to Denebola. It could also mean that this star is the cause of very exciting events. Badly placed in a map with Mercury or Uranus, mental diseases (mostly incurable ones) are indicated. Fine aspects, however, will further work connected with matters of reform and progress. [2]

Denebola, β Leonis is the second brightest of the Constellation and easy to see in the sky without optical aids. The name comes from Al Danab Al Asad. The Tail of the Lion, so Danabala. It lies 22° past Regulus (the Lion faces backwards in the Zodiac) and so it has been in the Virgo Sign since about 300 AD. Ptolemy gave Denebola a Saturn-Venus quality, which must make it at least mildly ‘Benefic’ even in traditional astrology, since Venus was held to be the only planet that could really get along with Saturn. The tails of the celestial creatures are at least as important as their heads, being in some cases their weaponry (Scorpio), in others their means of communication (Cetus, the Whale), in others their link to the past, and, of course, sometimes ‘the part we don’t talk about’! The Lion’s tail has the quality of being farthest from the end that one should not approach unwarily, and so it has a venusian quality of peace and safety about it, but we should still not be tempted into ‘pulling the lion’s tail,’ as the vernacular saying has wisely warned. Therein lies the Saturn quality of Denebola. We should expect, therefore, that this star symbolizes strength from the Lion along with both the ability and the need to use it wisely and constructively. There should also be the note of looking forward while at the same time being able to draw upon past experience, gained at the head end of the animal, so to say, since this Lion faces back down the Zodiac, as already remarked. Perhaps the ‘achilles heel’ of monarchs, even the most progressive of them, is that their positions are much steeped in past tradition that it is all too difficult to come forward from it, even if they want to. Thus, from this special forward-looking attribute of Denebola, we might well ponder that on with this star strong in their horoscope is at least well favored, and possibly more so, in our times – than with the mighty Regulus at his service. And those are indeed the qualities of Denebola. [3]

Anonymous of 379 AD said Denebola resembles Saturn and Venus. [6]

Denebola rules the front of the chest. [5]

Leo Constellation

Ptolemy makes the following observations: “Of the stars in Leo, two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars. The three in the neck are like Saturn, and in some degree like Mercury. . . . Those in the loins . . . Saturn and Venus: those in the thighs resemble Venus, and, in some degree, Mercury.” It is said that the stars in the neck, back and wing all bring trouble, disgrace and sickness affecting the part of the body ruled by the sign, especially if they happen to be in conjunction with the Moon. By the Kabalists, Leo is associated with the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump “Strength.” [1]

In mundane astrology, Leo Constellation is associated with royal events, especially the ascension or death of kings and queens, the election or death of heads of state, assassinations, uprisings and massacres, currency and the stock exchange, the Vatican and the European Union.

Fixed Star Denebola Conjunctions

Ascendant conjunct Denebola: Riches, preferment and good fortune attended by many dangers and anxieties through own folly, benefits seldom last, trouble and sickness. [1]

Found on the Ascendant and especially in company with Mercury, a quarrelsome nature with a liking for legal action is attributed to Denebola. It could also mean that this star is the cause of very exciting events.[2]

A splendid and illustrious life; glorious, mighty and commanding nature; fame, busy with many activities, bountiful resources, well known or feared in cities and regions. Prosperity from youth and in own city. Prosperous natives, who have many possessions, are well known and subject to passions, commit obscenities or speak softly. They have harsh words towards the pleasures of love and, with the passing of age, participate in some priestly office, are esteemed for some religious practice or self-mastery, refuse some foods (red meat?) and are experts in occult books. They become lovers of the sciences of the sky, their eyes are somewhat glaucous and glittering, and their appearance is beautiful. [6]

If, at the same time, Saturn or Mars is with Algol, death by sentence. [1]

A splendid and illustrious life; great, distinguished and opulent nature. [6]

High honors and preferment in association with public affairs. The native should avoid getting involved with questionable associates and avoid controversial issues. This could be politically, socially, or with members of the native’s family, which could create unpleasant situations that are not easily or readily resolved. Some natives with this conjunction could develop the tendency to gravitate towards undesirables or undesirable associates. Natives must learn to keep their counsel. Violence possible. [7]

Mercury conjunct Denebola: Many losses through agents or servants and through writings, loss of one of the family through malignant or contagious disease. [1]

Pisitive Mercury: The native has a sharp mentality, has the ability to make rapid decisions, is very tenacious, single-minded, busy or interested in ‘other people’s affairs’; this may surface by becoming involved with less fortunate people, or those the native believes are wrongly abused or accused, or in some manner serving the people. The native is of a worrisome nature, not readily apparent. Their decisions, while generally correct, will at times be open to question. If the natives’ Mercury is not strongly posited, i.e., in conjunction or square to Pluto, there may be a tendency for the native to be of a wavering nature. Acquaintances and friends may create problems for the native, which could prove temporarily embarrassing. These natives tend to be of an uncompromising nature.

Negative Mercury: In general, the same attributes apply to both positive and negative nativities. However, the less advanced or more negative natives tend to make swift decisions that could create problems, they may become involved in controversial issues. Problems they create can be of a lasting nature. Friends create problems for these natives, who tend to be uncompromising. [7]

Venus conjunct Denebola: Strong passions, led astray early in life, ruined through love affairs. [1]

These natives may develop a tendency towards entertaining strong feelings or opinions on people and subjects. If married, they tend to either remake their partners or look upon their partners in a parental fashion. The more negative or less advanced natives could be subject to sudden losses, most likely due to improper or lack of parental training, poor environment, or – early in their life, someone deliberately set the stage for neurosis. ‘Despair and regrets’ follow later in life. Most of these natives leave their mark, for good or for bad. [7]

Giorgio Baglivi 0°08′ (and Sun), Robert De Niro 0°19′, Kylie Jenner 0°34′ (and N.Node), Rachael Ray 0°47′ (and Moon, Pluto), Kay Parker 1°08′ (and Mercury), Guy de Maupassant 1°35′, Kim Kardashian 1°44′.

Mars conjunct Denebola: Bitter, vindictive, cruel, unpopular, loss of position and public disgrace. [1]

More positive natives will appear to be of a calm, determined nature. They may be forthright, ambitious,  shrewd and energetic. Negatively, the natives will tend to cover up their shortcomings with excuses. Negative nativities subject themselves to self-made problems; they may be unnecessarily critical, of a carping nature, even vindictive and bitter. This will make them unpopular, and although they might be aware of this, nevertheless, they will continue their carping attitude. [7]

This causes slight lesions in the lungs giving the native a burning sensation. The lesions and tiny cuts can become clogged due to colds or smoking, and the lungs begin to deteriorate. Wrapping a cloth containing warmed spearmint herb would be very beneficial. Herbs have a great healing energy that the body can absorb. [5]

Jupiter conjunct Denebola: Pride, hypocrisy, disappointed life, troubles abroad or through relatives, secret enemies, danger of imprisonment or death by sentence. [1]

The native is prideful, generally of their families and their families background, but also of their accomplishments or what they have tried to accomplish, no matter how small. Unless Jupiter is of a positive nature, there remains the possibility of a disappointed life with despair and regrets to follow. [7]

Yoko Ono 0°00′, Sid Vicious 0°54′, Will Smith 1°06′ (and Pluto), Bernardo Provenzano 1°44′ (and Mars).

Saturn conjunct Denebola: Critical, always complaining, many enemies, loss through servants and thieves, domestic sorrow, wife afflicted or children mentally unsound or deformed. [1]

There is a weakness in the lungs causing fluids to accumulate. Congestion of the lungs occurs, which can also affect the heart, resulting in a sluggish heartbeat. This can be painful, but it continues as these individuals are not aware there is a problem at this point. Usually, they are the ones who smoke and who cough frequently. The dull, aching pain in the chest that they feel is more often than not blamed on the heart, but the problem is in the lungs. If the problem is not taken care of, they have a change of attitude toward others. They become impatient and make unusual demands on others. The herb chamomile is excellent for the lungs and should be taken daily. [5]

Dr. Phil McGraw 0°00′, Ronaldinho 1°44′, Jeff Bridges 2°02′.

Mars and Saturn conjunct Denebola: This point would cause considerable deterioration of the lungs. These persons would be coughing up blood and debris. Tuberculosis is a typical ailment at this point. This can be considered karmic as they would have to suffer for a long time in order that they have a change of attitude, something brought from a past life. All combinations of the herbs should be taken by those with this conjunction on this degree. [5]

Uranus conjunct Denebola: Subject to fits, idiotic, insane, and sometimes violent, sharp and cunning, may commit murder during insanity. [1]
